No Shock in Falluja Over Slaying of Americans
No Shock in Falluja Over Slaying of Americans
Thu Apr 1, 2004 10:07 AM ET
By Michael Georgy

FALLUJA, Iraq (Reuters) - The burned and mutilated bodies of four Americans paraded on the streets have gone but they are still stirring up angry residents of this bitter town who say more bloody killings should be expected.

"The Americans may think it is unusual but this is what they should expect. They show up in places and shoot civilians so why can't they be killed?" Falluja shop worker Amir said on Thursday.

A day after the bodies of four mutilated Americans were burned and dragged through Falluja's main street in broad daylight, there is one sentiment gripping Falluja -- they got what they deserved.

The gruesome scenes shocked the outside world.

But locals said the violence, in which the U.S. contractors were left at the mercy of a crowd after a guerrilla attack, was perfectly normal in an occupation.

"It is understandable. We are glad this happened," said Amir, his friends nodding in agreement.

3. Welcome to the occupation
I don't know what people expected. We march into a soverign nation, bomb the hell out of them, institute martial law, igonore their cultural heritage, kill and main and destroy at will, and then sit there and scratch our heads and wonder why on Earth they're mad at us.

4. It is understandable. Effective, too.
The tactic is age old: Showcase a barbaric display in order to scare the shit out of anyone who dare thinks of setting foot in the town.

These are not stupid people...

24. Sure. Sort of like the Pirates of the Carribean..
where Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) sails into the English port and sees pirates hung for all to see. That was the warning to any pirates.

8. No shock in America...when Bush's ratings didn't
sink to at least 20%. Twenty percent would be just right. It would cover Falwell's religious crazies, kkk, and the shadow government of cheney.

I saw a guy with a bush/cheney bumper sticker, I drove close to him to see his face. He was a scary skinhead, probably nazi. I saw a lady with a Kerry bumpter sticker, I drove close to her and we both gave the victory sign.

Specifically, it is an invention of the UK going back to the early dark ages and possibly earlier. It was not banned as amethod of punishment in the UK until 1870

the parts and the head were often displayed on the London bridge--being allowed to rot there for many months.

10. Nor should there be
The city of al-Fallujah has faced the brunt of US aggressions from the beginning. Earlier in the week the US invaders shelled houses and a local hospital. Mosques have been routinely desecrated, their imans harassed and taken away. People, including the old, women and children (to say nothing of men of fighting age) shot at and killed, or seized and held as hostages by the occupyers and their lackeys.

There is much to account for, and expressions of revenge are no surprise.

12. The Iraqis are not to be underestimated..
Edited on Thu Apr-01-04 06:18 PM by leftchick
Whatever the truth, this is what they believe...

<Iraqis insist the men were either CIA agents or American soldiers in civilian clothing, dismissing reports they were security contractors for the U.S.-led occupying power. >

And this should be broadcast so the Amurkins can get a clue...

<"Of course these things will happen. What do you expect with the Americans occupying Iraq and killing our people?" said a taxi driver who declined to give his name. >

18. It does not sound as if Fallujah
is the kind of place to be anytime for Westerners. Did you see they refer to it as a "no-go" zone? Did they call them that in Vietnam?

16. Sure we're winning hearts and minds.
I just read a transcript from democracynowinterview with an iraqi engineer who said that this was probably retaliation for recent military killings that included women and children. Not to condone in any way this brutality, but a clearer picture is gained when receiving more than just the one-sided news that we are fed.

23. This is war...
The only way the Iraqis can really fight the americans.

I don't know who composes the Iraqis resistance. Likely a combination of terrorist cells, Baathist supporters, Iraqis Patriots, and everyday people distraught at the suffering their country has endured.

I do know however that these bombings, shootings, and ambushes will never stop. How much is America willing to bleed? How much is it willing to spend? How iron fisted are they prepared to be? I can see nothing but a total loss for America in this occupation and it would be a blow to Bush's symbolic battleground on the "war on terror"

25. People sometimes forget that Iraq has been at war for a generation
Iraq has been at war almost continuously for 25 years. Iraqis remember the War of the Cities, they remember Shock and Awe 1991, and they remember the sanctions. They are a very tough people, they remember wrongs perpetrated against them for centuries, and they may well put the smack-down on our candy asses.
