Mexico marijuana bust bigger than first thought
Source: ABC

The marijuana seized in Mexico's biggest bust ever weighed in at 121.5 tonnes, nearly 30 tonnes more than initially reported, authorities said.

Mexican security forces made the massive seizure on Monday after a shootout with traffickers, 11 of whom were arrested, officials said.

Some 15,300 packets of marijuana were counted, up from 10,000, a day after the drugs were found during raids on several houses in the border city of Tijuana following a shootout, security spokesman Alejandro Poire told a news conference.

"This is the largest seizure in the country's history of marijuana prepared and packed for sale and distribution," Mr Poire said.

"There are signs that are linked to the Pacific organisation," he said, referring to another name for the Sinaloa gang led by Mexico's most-wanted fugitive, Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman.

In announcing the capture on Monday, General Alfonso Duarte said the drugs were worth about $US335 million on the Mexican street, but their value could double or triple if sold in the United States.

2. That's a LOT of fucking weed. But, who's smoking that shit?
Last time I smoked anything from Mexico, I spent more time separating seeds (made me long for my one of my old vinyl double album covers) from the weed it was exasperating.

The shit grown locally is lovingly looked after and trimmed to perfection.
Not a seed in the zip code.
And a little dab will do ya too.
But still, that's a lot of damn weed.

4. Can that marijuana be used for anything other than for smoking -
like for the construction of houses, insulation, bedding for animals, making paper products, etc. The same uses as for hemp.

5. Never believe everything in a news story when the story involves law enforcement.
This story reeks of anti-marijuana/anti-Mexican sentiment.

7. This is so sad
that such a relatively harmless recreational plant should be treated the same as strong narcotics like cocaine and methamphetamine. Sad that people should be hurt or die for selling or possession of this benign pleasure drug given to us by mother earth.

8. I see this and think of prop 19
Just as you don't see any bootlegger's selling alcohol you wouldn't see any cartel's selling pot - in Cali anyway.

Problem is they are feeding the rest of the country.

9. Crappy weed anyway.
It'll make a good vacuum to be filled by some serious BC or Socal dank.

10. This bust represents only a small fraction
of the marijuana that's being home grown or whatever is coming into the country in a given year via other routes. One poster had it right, this reeks of anti-legalization sentiment. "Look the Drug War is working!!" So they give us an occasional flash of a larger-than-average bust.
According to the article the value of the bust in the U.S. would have been over $1 billion. If we taxed the stuff we could have gotten a piece of that money to pay for health care or something. Guess I should keep dreaming.
