Oscar Grant supporters plan Oakland rally Saturday

(10-19) 20:29 PDT OAKLAND -- Relatives and friends of Oscar Grant, the man shot and killed by a BART police officer in 2009, said Tuesday they plan to try to shut down Bay Area ports on Saturday.

A port workers' union and supporters of Grant said they will hold a rally at Oakland City Hall at noon. They want Johannes Mehserle, now a former officer, to receive the maximum prison term after a jury convicted him of involuntary manslaughter in Grant's slaying.

Marilyn Sandifur, a Port of Oakland spokeswoman, said Tuesday that the International Longshore and Warehouse Union, which represents port workers, had requested and been given permission by the Pacific Maritime Association, which represents marine terminal operators, to move its monthly "stop-work" meeting from Thursday to Saturday.

Mehserle is scheduled to be sentenced on November 5. Now how many people have ever gotten just probation and no serious prison time for involuntary manslaughter? I don't want Mehserle to be the first one, or to be freed that day. No.
