Tropical Storm Richard forms in Caribbean and could threaten Florida

By Danny Valentine, Times Staff Writer

The biggest threat to the west coast of Florida this hurricane season became Tropical Storm Richard on Thursday and experts expect it to become a hurricane by the weekend.

While while computer models diverge, most show the storm strengthening before it passes over the Yucatan Peninsula this weekend, then re-emerging in the Gulf of Mexico and curving to the northeast.

"Residents of Florida should be aware that there is a system to our south and they should be paying attention,'' said forecaster Daniel Brown of the National Hurricane Center. "There is still a lot that could happen with this storm, and it's a good reminder that it is still hurricane season."

Forecasters encouraged residents to review their hurricane preparedness plans.

4. I hope it turns into a Cat 5 and levels my house.
It would serve State Farm right. They're canceling us in February.

5. Don't hope for a Cat 5..please
I took a direct hit from Wilma, and it was a Cat2 almost Cat3 if I remember right. It was horrible. The eye passed right over my neighboorhood. I understand about hating State Farm, and wanting to stick it to them. All I could ever get for my place was Citizens.
