Strong quake hits off Mexico's Baja California

MEXICO CITY | Thu Oct 21, 2010 2:30pm EDT
(Reuters) - A powerful magnitude 6.9 quake struck in the Sea of Cortez off Mexico's Baja California on Thursday, rattling buildings in tourist resorts but there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

"It was felt strongly, the lamp (on the ceiling) moved but there is no damage, not even broken glass," said Monserrat Gorostieta, a receptionist at a hotel in the resort of La Paz in Baja California.

Civil Defense officials in the state of Sinaloa on the east coast of the Sea of Cortez said they had no reports of damage but were investigating reports that some buildings had been evacuated.

The quake, initially reported by the U.S. Geological Survey as a magnitude 6.6, was centered in the Sea of Cortez, 65 miles south of Los Mochis in the state of Sinaloa on the mainland. It was very shallow, just 6.2 miles below the seabed.

2. That's one heck of an AFTER shock!
Is it possible that one was induced by the swarm that preceded it?

8. It looked to be just north of the 7 or so that struck in the past

several days. And that group included two that were fivseys. I think we talking about a different swarm? Maybe my "swarm" was just a mess-o-quakes.

13. Yea up at the north end of the gulf...I think that may still be happening..
Interestingly, at the beginning that one seemed to have activity drift slowly northward, too.

Look out San Francisco--that big one could happen this century!

3. Close to the entrance of the Gulf of California
Wonder how much of that is based off stresses from the earthquakes earlier this year near Mexicali.
It is part of the San Andreas/Central American Highlands fault zones...

11. That might be a stretch
It might be comparable to seismic activity in Crescent City triggering an earthquake in Los Angeles.

5. Took some time to find it on the map almost as far south in Baja as you can go!

Right on the Tectonic Plate boundary which is also the line the San Andreas fall along!

7. There will be damage
Thankfully it is not under a population center

But I expect some damage in both La Paz and Reynosa. Mostly broken windows.

9. It appears it's this event:
http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/recenteqsww/Quakes/us2010crbl.php

Quite some distance from the "storm" of earthquakes that SoCal and northern Baja have had in the last months.

{Already linked; I'll leave it.}
...

But I can quit the tobacco chewing (I don't spit anymore, anyway)... honest. And cut back on the tobacco smoking.

And lose some weight.

Honest.
