The Bank CEO Who Washed Up In A Michigan Lake Was Shot 'Execution Style'

David Widlak

More details have emerged about the death of a prominent Bank CEO who after having been missing for one month, washed up in a Michigan lake. A second autopsy of David Widlak's body - which was discovered by a duck hunter on Sunday - revealed that he was shot in the back of the head. The Oakland County medical examiner Dr. Dragovic, determined Widlak was shot "execution style."

Incredibly, an initial autopsy conducted by the local medical examiner had missed the gun shot wound. Dr. Spitz of Macomb County blames antiquated equipment for missing the gun shot wound in his first examination, and also points to how badly decomposed the body.

Widlak's case is turning into a real-life, terrifying, murder mystery for the financial crisis era. The prosecutor predicts that the case will soon become a murder investigation in which detectives will begin "scrutinizing Widlak's activities over many months in search of patterns or aberrations."

15. They're doing it already... read comment #4.....
bluestatedon 5 minutes ago

"This is obviously the work of the Mexican drug gangs that have taken over large areas of Michigan. They're working hand-in-hand with the Taliban that have taken over Dearborn, imposing Sharia law there. You can't go out at night in Grosse Pointe or Bloomfield Hills without seeing Burka-clad women or drug gangsters patrolling their territory."

5. What bank? How is this guy prominent? Why is this anything other than a local crime story,
if indeed its even that?

Sometimes I wish TPM placed a context paragraph in their stories. Otherwise, always an interesting read.

When people start killing banksters execution style, it is likly to raise concern in the organ used to pump the blood of other bankers.

19. When they off Hank Paulson or Hank Greenberg, then it belongs under political coverage.
Heaven forbid. I don't think we have enough evidence to conclude this is the start of a trend, just yet.

12. Um, hmm, well...
We'll see.

I live here, and I've heard all about this story on the local media for a few weeks.

Based on the advanced state of decomposition, it's actually really hard to tell, per reports here today interviewing a couple of forensic pathologists, exactly how the gunshot wound was inflicted.

All indications really point to suicide, despite what the family wants to believe, or at least say they believe. Remember, life insurance doesn't pay off for suicide, so it's in their best financial interest to push a homicide theory.

Unless the police know things they aren't saying, it sounds like this man was just distraught over his career going down the tubes and killed himself.

And, unless I'm missing something, there were no indications of foul play at his office, and he was seen on security cameras leaving the building alone.

For the record, it was Lake St. Clair where the body was found. Lake Michigan is on the other side of the state.

21. Cororner ruling: LIKELY HOMICIDE. With link.
Edited on Thu Oct-21-10 01:56 PM by Pathwalker

The article states the coroner has ruled this to be a likely homicide, and explains why. Most people don't shoot themselves in the back of the head.

24.  Also, his car was never left the parking lot of the bank
yet his body and the gun were found in the lake several miles from the bank. His office at the bank had been found in "disarry" the morning after his disappearance, as well.

Either he tossed his own office, or someone else did. And he either walked several miles to the lake to kill himself by shooting the back of his own neck, or someone drove him there and did the shooting.

My guess is the latter.

26. Only 3 miles. A long walk.
But, yeah, nobody shoots themselves in the back of the head. They found the gun just a few feet from the body. They did not say how many bullets were in the gun.

22. I never heard of suicide by gunshot to the back of the head.
Based on the OP this appears to be new information that discredit any suicide theory.

23. As long as the policy is in good standing for at least two years, life insurance does pay
after a suicide.
