JEFFERSON CITY - After a debate that touched on the number of Henry the VIII's wives, Alexander the Great's gay soldiers and the fact that Egyptian kings kept concubines, the state House adopted Wednesday a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriages.
Missouri voters will get the chance to vote on the amendment in the November general election if the amendment gets final legislative approval. State law already provides that Missouri recognizes a marriage only between a man and a woman.
Backers of the amendment said it was needed to lock the prohibition in the constitution to protect male-female unions from "radical judges." Opponents said it was redundant, discriminatory and a waste of time when important issues were awaiting debate.
