NEWSWEEK Poll: Obama Approval Rating Jumps, Democrats Close ‘Enthusiasm Gap’
Source: Newsweek

Despite doom-saying about Democrats’ chances in the midterms, the latest NEWSWEEK poll (full results) shows that they remain in a close race with Republicans 12 days before Election Day, while the president’s approval ratings have climbed sharply. The poll finds that 48 percent of registered voters would be more likely to vote for Democrats, compared to 42 percent who lean Republican (those numbers are similar to those in the last NEWSWEEK poll, which found Democrats favored 48 percent to 43 percent). President Obama’s approval ratings have jumped substantially, crossing the magic halfway threshold to 54 percent, up from 48 percent in late September, while the portion of respondents who disapprove of the president dropped to 40 percent, the lowest disapproval rating in a NEWSWEEK poll since February 2010. However, his approval rating, which is notably higher than many recent polls of the president’s popularity, may be evidence of a closing “enthusiasm gap” more than a sea change in voter attitudes, and may not substantially affect Democrats’ fortunes come Election Day. In 1994, NEWSWEEK polls showed a similar steep climb in President Clinton’s approval between late September and late October, but Democrats still suffered a rout in the midterms.

While two thirds (69 percent) of self-identified Republican voters say they’ve given a lot or some thought to the election, 62 percent of Democrats say they have. This result indicates that the difference in enthusiasm between Democratic and Republican voters may be less stark than some other polls have suggested. A small plurality of registered voters—48 to 43 percent—would prefer that Democrats keep control of Congress. (The poll’s margin of error is 4.3 percent.) The new survey also offers a morsel of evidence that Democrats’ strategy of gaining an edge among early voters might be succeeding. They hold a 10-point lead among those who have already voted, 52 points to 42, but because the sample only represents 92 voters out of the 1,005 polled, Hugick says more polling is necessary for a conclusive picture. Early voting—which has steadily gained popularity in recent years—is expected to have an impact on the election, with three in 10 voters expected to cast ballots before Nov. 2.

Pollster Larry Hugick says that while Republicans are still likely to come out on top on Nov. 2, the results of the new poll show it might not be the runaway domination some commenters have suggested. “The idea that the Democrats are just going to sit this one out doesn’t seem very likely,” he says. “While there’s no question that Republicans are going to pick up seats, the question is how many.”

One factor feeding excitement for the GOP: the Tea Party. A quarter of likely voters, 24 percent, say they support the movement, with 27 percent of likely voters opposing it. Among Tea Party supporters, two thirds identify as Republicans, but nine in 10 intend to vote for Republican candidates for Congress. Eighty-one percent of Tea Party backers oppose the bank bailouts, 90 percent oppose health-care reform, and 85 percent think the economic stimulus was bad for the country. Among the entire sample of voters, two thirds look unfavorably on the bailouts, but support and opposition for the stimulus and health-care reform are roughly equal and within the margin of error.

40. The more even the race gets, the more outlandish the claims of a D wipeout.
Here's this news from Newsweek showing Ds pulling even, yet Bill Maher tonight said that some pundits are predicting the Ds will lose ONE HUNDRED SEATS in the House!! A hundred seats? We've gone from losing 20-some to 50 some to losing 100 seats in the course of a week? And this as the polls are tightening and Ds are pulling AHEAD in some major races?

The RW/MSM desperation reeks, doesn't it?

My prediction: Ds will do just fine, losing 6 House seats while picking up a Senate seat, which will lead to the RW lawyers descending with charges of voter fraud.

68. Love to share your opyimism but....
I believe the dems will lose 25ish in the House and a couple, maybe 3, in the Senate. And that's me being optimistic, though that 100 seat prediction is way off in my opinion.

Remember the Rule of Incumbent Quality: My congressman is great, yours sucks ass.

You know what's gonna happen: the next Congress is going to look very, very much like this one--somewhere between a 10-seat Republican pickup and a 10-seat Democratic one.

7. NEWSWEEK Poll: Obama Approval Rating Jumps, Democrats Close ‘Enthusiasm Gap’

48. Early voting results are favoring Dems, too.
You're right, in that, we have to see how it all shakes out in final numbers. However, my gut has told me for weeks that the results were not going to be anywhere near as bad for Dems as the media and pollsters have been desperately trying to make us believe, probably in the hopes of creating a self-fulfilling prophesy.

10. Amazing...if you watch Chuckie Todd - and even PBS newshour -
you would think that the Dems should throw in the towel because no one is going to vote for them. Seems like there is an all out effort to disenfranchise Dem voters as much as possible to keep them away from the polls..thus ensuring that the right wing media corporate masters will get their friends back in office.

Disgusting....

Glad we don't have anything more than basic cable...the little TV we watch is bad enough!

14. I am glad that our worries have had an impact, BUT
we ALWAYS had the majority. The polling companies have been doing a nasty PR, spin, and propaganda campaign, trying to serve their corpserate sponsors. Now that they see that we are not buying it, they have to gradually change their numbers, correct them, and pretend that this is a shift in voting preferences, instead of being what it really is- a nasty subversive effort to keep down our votes. They wanted us depressed, hopeless, unconcerned. Except, we were not, and are not. When your computer model thinks that 54% of women, 55% of hispanics, and 48% of blacks support the GOP over the Democrats, I mean really. Give me an effing break. Even worse, they only poll land line phone users. Cell phones have a younger, far more liberal than the ancient, aged, land line folks.

I truly believe the Tea Party is just the far right, not any new party or new views. Probably at this point in the game more controlled by the Corporate ass hats and backed by the "wanna be" shills i.e. pompous christians, couch referee raciest and the like. Take one shot my Dem. friends and make it count! Although you might have to hold your nose like me and give a blue dog a vote.
Everything starts at the town hall meetings, the P.T.A.,your local Union, community centers' even what co-op you patronize.

For the last year I have listened to these TPers gloat and talk about how bad the democrats are going to get beat. Over the last 2 weeks they have become very quiet and the attacks on their candidates are going mostly unchallenged. They are not smart enough to keep their mouths shut as a strategy. All the momentum is on our side. Now that the country is really starting to pay attention, the polls are showing the more these extremist candidates open their mouths the more they stick their feet in them. I like our chances. I know lots of us are mad I am too but my momma didn't raise no fools. I'll be voting a straight Democratic ticket as usual.

71. Fox News emphasizes polls whose results they like, and DU does the same thing.
This latest Newsweek poll gives better results for the Democrats than some other polls do. So of course a lot of people at DU choose to believe the Newsweek poll while they call the latest Gallup poll bullshit because it doesn't make the Democrats look quite as good.

Myself, I am just waiting for the only poll that counts on election day.

47. Just a quick note
I called two of my friends who are Democrats, but never voted before '06. They weren't going to vote in '08 until I offered to drive them so the three of us went to an early voting site and got it done. Called them this week and they said they wouldn't go on their own, but if I'd take them they'd vote. I'm taking them next Saturday.

You might know someone who just needs a ride to the polls to vote. If so, give them one.

55. Get out the vote dems, unless you want the little bit of
progress we've made undone. The GOP is itching to launch investigations, and wouldn't be surprised if they drummed up some ridiculous charges to pursue impeachment.

57. I'm afraid to let myself hope
I've already voted, and now I'm going to close my eyes and cover my ears and hold my breath until this election is over. Figuratively speaking, of course.

59. The closer the numbers
the easier it is for the folks who own the voting machines to steal the election.

63. I still say the R's are going to lose big...
you can't run a campaign on nothing. They have nothing....non-existent budget closures; SS going "private", some nuts saying obviously Constitutional items don't exist, or should be repealed, (Hey! Bachmann, Angle, O'Donnell.... how about we repeal the 19th Amendment...the one where women were finally granted suffrage!). Keep the bush tax cuts, which affects abut 2% of the population?

These people want to do nothing but investigate PO, stop all progress and make things to keep the wars going...R's are pure shit. Issa should be selling used cars in the desert.

80. Well said
I guess it just speaks to greed and racism for the fact that so many will vote for the Thug-licans. What a confused group of people.

70. Well I for one am enthusing my brains out.
This isn't even "Hold your nose and vote." It's "They'll take away everything we've fought for vote." Enthusiasm and terror in one package.

74. How sweet it is
if the Dems keep control of the House. I have a good feeling that the Dems will keep control of the Senate, and probably there will be big surprises in the Governor races. I have read that majority of the pollsters lean, if not heavily, towards the Repugs and seems like recently these pollster are only polling approximately 600 or less people mainly from landlines.
