Clark wages uphill battle to unseat Bachmann
Source: Minneapolis Star Tribune

After lobbing grenades at each other for months, Bachmann, Clark and Anderson are slated to appear in the first of three debates on Tuesday.

1. Ugh.
"Michele really speaks the way I like somebody in politics to speak," said Mary Bzdok, a mother of 10 children having a document notarized at a law firm in St. Cloud. "She sticks to a point."

3. Batshit Bachmann....the perfect choice for all the batshit crazy voters...
I am appalled that there actually so many out there who would vote for that creature to represent them.

sad and sick...and scary as hell.

10. I have wondered if her district is populated only with chains of insane asylums.
It must take really special people to keep sending someone religiously insane for successive terms in Congress.

5. I can't wrap my mind around what Minnesota has become.
Edited on Sat Oct-23-10 05:00 PM by xchrom
Really can't.

The days of the liberal Midwest farming strongholds
Have truly mutated.

A humiliating mistake about who was running where
Has forced me to replace Wisconsin for Minnesota.
My apologies to all my teachers for a momentary
Session with Teh Stoopid.

6. You mean Minnesota.
Bachmann is in Minnesota. Even our most batshit-crazy congressman, Jim Senselessbrainer, is nowhere near as stupid as Bachmann.

14. I live in this district.
I wouldn't exactly call it a mecca for right-wing extremism (at least in my area). But like someone else said earlier, there are a lot of suburbs in the district that tend to go republican. Where I live it is a mix of small communities that have seen a lot of growth in the past decade, plus rural areas that tend to be fairly religious. I think the anti-abortion thing plays a significant role in the voting patterns due to the large catholic population. But it's also the most republican district in MN. I believe republicans have at least a 10% advantage in numbers. So anyone taking on Bachmann starts at a disadvantage. And it's not like she's winning with big margins. She just hangs on to enough of that republican advantage in raw numbers to offset all the Democrats and Independents who can't stand her. I don't think she could win anywhere else in Minnesota, quite honestly.

15. Ok
It sounds pretty strong Republican. gerrymandered, I expect? Good safe place for her, GOP people vote for her automatically and pay little attention to her fatuous ideas. The District can do much better than her.

In the last election it was quite close.

17. I think you're correct about the gerrymandering aspect.
Before 2000 this was a reliably Democratic district. Then they changed the boundaries and it became what it is now: the most republican one in the state. Because of that Bachmann has managed to come up with a couple of narrow victories--despite her nuttiness. If the Democrats hold on to the state legislature this year, and Mark Dayton gets elected governor, maybe they'll change the boundaries again. It would only have to be a bit more Democratic to make Bachmann unelectable.

19. Bachmann has benefited from the presence of 3rd party candidates
Edited on Mon Oct-25-10 12:12 PM by brentspeak
Independence candidate Bob Anderson got 10% of the vote in 2008, enough to keep Elwyn Tinklenberg from winning the election (Bachmann: 46.41%/Tinklenberg: 43.43%/Anderson: 10%).
