The White House Spins The Boy Who Yawned
Friday, April 2, 2004; Page C01

The White House, trying to get out in front of the Yawning Boy story, is now in charge of media access to the young man who was seen on David Letterman's show this week yawning his way through one of President Bush's less robust speeches.

Letterman's Worldwide Pants television production company has booked 13-year-old Tyler Crotty -- son of Orange County, Fla., chairman and major Bush fundraiser Richard Crotty -- as a guest on tonight's CBS late-night show.

"He's a young person who strongly supports the president and is excited about getting a chance to talk about it," White House assistant press secretary Reed Dickens told The TV Column yesterday.

Dickens has been named go-to guy for anyone wanting to interview Tyler, who gained national prominence when Letterman introduced a new segment on his show Monday called "George W. Bush Invigorates America's Youth."

(snip)

"I think whatever problems the Bushes might have had with the son they got over with pretty quick as soon as Dad reached 'Pioneer status,' " Maxwell says. That's the hokey title given to anyone who raises more than $100,000 for the president's reelection effort.

"Crotty goes way back with the Bushes; he worked on the dad's campaign in the '80s," Maxwell says. And according to the Orange County government Web site, Richard Crotty was appointed county chairman by Gov. Jeb Bush in 2001.

4. bingo
their first, last, and every instinct is to lie for political gain. spin the best picture possible, truth be damned.

the truth is only relevant because sometimes, and i do mean only sometimes, enough other people seem to pay attention to the truth that it becomes an inconvenience and interferes with the message they want to send out. only then to they somewhat cater their message to elements of the truth.

clinton lied about a private affair. bush lies about everything else. but wait, does anyone think bush would tell the truth about an affair? rewind. bush lies about everything. period.

38. Exactly,
I'm sure there's video footage of politicians everywhere where some kid being used as part of a back drop is obviously disinterested or bored out of his skull.

Kids don't want to be placed in that kind of environment to begin with and the Bush administration should have just let it pass as an obvious joke.

Now, they're going to have the dad bring the kid out to say how much he loves Bush. Makes it actually look worse than if they had done nothing.

10. They must control the WH "image", even down to the minute details
Edited on Fri Apr-02-04 02:01 AM by Rex
This is one of the ways a governing body must use in order to establish legitimacy over a populace (since they didn't get elected).

There are four main ways to show legitimacy as a governing entity:

1. elected by the "people".
2. military force.
3. mass propaganda.
4. divine right of kings.

number one doesn't apply (we all know that). And they can't quite yet use number two (Ashcroft is working on it). Number four is also out.

That only leaves mass propaganda. I believe it is solely the Mainstream Press that gives Bush the power to rule over us. They have been an active participant in this deception from the very beginning. I believe some of them know that they are the only ones that prop up our little Emperor.

How Russia faced its dark past

By Angus Roxburgh
BBC News Online
One of history's greatest tyrants died 50 years ago today. In his three decades as ruler of the Soviet Union, Josef Stalin killed most of his closest comrades and exterminated the country's finest military leaders and intellectual brains.

He incarcerated millions in labour camps and turned neighbour against neighbour in a frenzy of denunciations and terror.

The "glasnost" era finally let Stalin's true record emerge
He ruthlessly forced peasants into collective farms, causing famine, and turned industry from top to bottom into a command economy which produced impressive quantities of tanks and weapons (enough to defeat Hitler's invading army) but eventually ground creaking to a halt.

Even today historians argue over exactly how many million deaths he was responsible for - an irony, given his own view that "the death of one person is a tragedy; a million deaths is a statistic".

Stalin created a system of total political control, under which journalists and artists were forced to glorify the Great Leader and the communist system, and even scientists worked in an ideological straitjacket.

In Russia itself all subsequent leaders have been defined by their attitude to him. Nikita Khrushchev in 1956 denounced Stalin's "cult of the personality" and freed millions from the labour camps.

14. Dave thinks the story smells
"This whole thing just smells. Doesn't it smell a little bit?" Letterman asked his audience last night.

"I mean, it just seems all just a little too tidy, just a little too neat. And now, the guy, the kid in Florida -- and his old man -- was really upset in the beginning. . . . Well, now everybody down there loves it. Everybody couldn't be happier; everybody thought it was hilarious. So you see, it's just a little too tidy. Stuff like this never ends happily, certainly not happily for me. I was waiting for the lawsuit, I was waiting to be arrested, I was waiting to be beaten to a pulp, and now, oh, everybody, oh, we couldn't be happier."

16. I honestly think
that the only way to reach people (middle America) is through the popular media. I mean, I'm sure Howard Stern is starting to chip away at his listeners who are bush sympathetic. At the other audience extreme we have David letterman telling people something isn't right. The thing that's most impressive is that these aren't simply late night jokes, but this is serious outrage and disgust.

this is the way the bush ends
this is the way the bush ends
this is the way the bush ends
not with a bang, but with laughter.

"And to recap; I'm being stovepiped by the Whitehouse"

Interesting choice of words, given that Seymour Hersh wrote about the CIA term "Stovepiping" recently in an article in the New Yorker. The piece was about the suppression and selected use of certain information about Iraq's nonexistent WMDs.

It's that an organization of basically healthy people would take it in stride and turn it to their advantage, as in laughing along with it. What IS the problem?

The people you'd need to worry about are the ones who are TOO INVOLVED, to the point of obvious phoniness, like the dweeb with the flag. Ohmigosh!

30. Really!
I was posting at CNN's message boards when that video was shown the first time. (CNN closed it all down under the new management, as they undoubtedly didn't like to have any Democratic posters.)

A poster there said that he saw it. It was during the 2000 Presidential campaign, and he said when he saw it, he was startled, as the guy was out campaigning, and that it was so funny the poster nearly died laughing.

Thanks for the news that it can be howled at by people who missed it the first time!

The poster said that it was totally incongruous, and hilarious.

33. Ridiculing Bush for his incessant lying needs to become common.
Bush is the most compulsive and incessant liar in the history of American politics.

There is no subject so somber, serious, or shallow that Bush will not lie about it. The only other option is not to lie. And that is something Bush can not do.

These points need to be made and emphasized over and over and over again.

Ridiculing Bush for his compulsive and incessant lying needs to become common, especially among Americans who do not follow politics.

Is it true that John McCain has an illegitimate Negro daughter and the yawning boy was not there and was not yawning and besides he was standing some place else and Richard Clarke had complete access to Bush and Rice which proves that Clarke was out of the loop which is Clinton's fault so unnamed White House sources may be identified whenever Bush wants to even though everyone except Bush himself knows where he was during his Alabama National Guard service which was after he volunteered to go to Viet Nam but before he was no longer required to take a flight physical and about the same time that God told Bush to smite Saddam which is Clinton's fault because the 60 lines of embryonic stem cells prove that republican science is better than sound science but the Bush administration did not illegally reveal the identity of a covert CIA operative which resulted in 2,000,000 new jobs being created because democrats support terrorism and are not good Americans just as the Jews were not good Germans which is Clinton's fault and the White House is cooperating with the 9/11 commission which is why the White House called the republicans on the commission before Clarke testified since the dental xrays prove that Bush did not ignore either the repeated warnings of the dangers of al Qaeda and Osama or the August 2001 intelligence briefing specifically warning of the upcoming 9/11 attacks because the United States is a nation with a mission and that mission is to bring freedom to every single person in the world which will cut the deficit in half if you do not count those parts of the deficit which will increase under Bush which is Clinton's fault but the boxes from China were labeled "Made in USA" which resulted in 2,600,000 new jobs being created even though the $400 billion decorative medicare turkey was not labeled $550 billion which proves that government spending under Bush has gone down if you do not count the increased government spending under Bush which is Clinton's fault and Bush's plane to Baghdad was spotted because before Saddam bought the uranium and became an urgent but not an imminent threat which is Clinton's fault Bush had no plans on his desk to invade Iraq since the invasion was not planned before Bush took office and the aircraft carrier was too far offshore for the Navy to make a large enough Mission Accomplished banner to describe the WMD we have found in Iraq some of which Saddam was giving to Osama for following Saddam's plans and using Iraqi hijackers on 9/11 which is Clinton's fault but everyone who pays income taxes got a tax cut which created 3,000,000 new jobs and allowed Iraqi oil revenue to pay for the cost of the reconstruction of Iraq after the invasion by a small number of troops who would be greeted with floral program related activities except for the dead and wounded troops who are being brought home secretly which is Clinton's fault since Bush is the one who hugs the mothers and the widows and the wives and the kids and that is why Bush who is responsible for good economic numbers but not bad economic numbers which is Clinton's fault wrote the poem that he did not write blaming Laura for dropping the dog?

37. they're all just nuts
"Dickens says the Bush campaign was tickled about the whole thing: 'We think it's all in good nature, very good-humored.'"

Then WHY did they call CNN and tell them the video was faked???

CNN is clearly lying here to cover the fact that they give the WH editorial approval of their stories. You don't just dream up the fact that the WH has called and go on air with that. They CALLED.

Good god, they even spin a friggin' kid! And the father sounds like a nut, that he didn't 'prepare him' for the Bush* rally. It's like Hitler youth, like the kid let down der fuehrer.

Of course, the media won't touch this, because it shows how insane this administration is and they must be protected at all costs. Note how the Washington Post didn't even TRY to find out the truth, they just noted CNN's denial.

50. When you watch the balding, flag guy in that first video he changes
position - first being on yawnboy's left and later on his right.

I bet this is one reason why the stupid WH analysts thought Letterman had fidgeted with the video.

69. CNN got some 'splaining to do
How could they repeat a nonexistent white house quote?
One of two possibilities:

1)Someone at CNN made this up and maybe they didn't think it would get aired. If this is true, why is that person still working at CNN? How is this different from a print reporter making up quotes?

2)Someone, either from the white house or impersonating a white house spokesperson, called CNN and fed them the quote. If this is true why isn't CNN saying that? Why would they cover for this person?

44. Letterman's reply last night was priceless (and VERY telling)...
<snip from the linked article>
I was waiting for the lawsuit, I was waiting to be arrested, I was waiting to be beaten to a pulp, and now, oh . . . we couldn't be happier."
</snip>

Yep, REAL tidy, all right...

45. I thought Letterman was joking
when he said the Whitehouse was handling bookings for this kid. This is really sick. You know they'll have this kid so coached, he's probably spending the entire day being forced to memorize the RNC talking points.

48. A picture that's truly worth a thousand
pukes:
http://media.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/images/I43471-2004Apr01L

"It turns out, due to what we might say a misunderstanding among the folks who are usually so fantastic behind me here in the newsroom, it turns out that was not true," (CNN's Daryl) Kagan said yesterday. "The White House, it turns out, I guess never did call us about the tape...and apparently we now see no evidence that it was faked."

What "we might say" was a misunderstanding? She "guesses" the White House never called? "Apparently" the tape wasn't faked? How about this: The White House DID call, and CNN is denying it now because it's backfiring publicitywise. I guess that the Mission Accomplished banner scandal went right over their heads--they're lying about things that it isn't important to lie about!

52. So Who's Being Fired At CNN For LYING About the WH Calling?
If I was a CNN exec I'd be pissed that someone LIED and said the WH called to refute a story when they didn't and it got out over the air.

If I was the WH and CNN LIED and said that someone from the WH called when they didn't, I'd be pissed.

So who's head is gonna roll? Who's responsible? How did it happen that "The WH Called..." got out over the air and was reported as fact???

Note: I believe the WH DID call, but I'm just saying, the normal reaction would be a head rolling if they DIDN'T call and someone made that up...

In the BBC News article the father claims that Tyler was so excited about seeing Bush that he didn't sleep much the night before thus explaining his yawning, etc.

Yeah, that's exactly what I get when I watch that video, a young boy who's REALLY excited about seeing the President. The father looks like a real dickhead, too. Check out the way he's holding the flag. It looks as though he's admiring Bush and saying a prayer at the same time. Creepy, creepy man.

57. If the media outside of CNN picks up on this
then they can say "see, we weren't lapdogs to the Bush* administration; we showed a kid yawning during one of his speeches"! And somehow that will make their non-coverage of their lying about the reason for the Iraq war, the Plame outing, the 9/11 commission stonewalling, the stolen Democratic files, the wretched economy, the environmental destruction of unprecedented scale, the lies, lies, and more damnable lies OK.

75. This one's not passing smell test - kid's dad is * Pioneer
From article.

<snip>

Crotty says he and Tyler were seated a dozen or so seats from the podium. But when event organizers discovered two no-shows in the row right behind Bush, the local party chairman took Tyler and they sat in the empty seats, Crotty said.

<snip>

Turns out that Tyler has a history of upstaging speakers.

Two years ago, he introduced his dad before his annual state-of-the-county speech. Tyler ended by jamming his fist up into the air, which earned him a standing ovation.

"Tyler's peppy introduction earned louder applause than most of what his father said," recalls Orlando Sentinel columnist Scott Maxwell, who blew the lid off this week's story of the video kid's identity.

77. Faux, Drudge or Limbaugh will find a "Kerry boring a kid" story
Will see a video or photoshoped pic of Kerry circa 1990 boring some kid to sleep. It might even have Jane Fonda in it for good measure.

Kerry will fess up that, yes, he is boring to kids. He will explain that he his 60 years old and talking national policy whereas the kids would rather be playing Gamecube and hang out with 12 year olds.

As a result Bush's approval among young voters will increase 10 percentage points.

Edited on Fri Apr-02-04 08:36 PM by Mayberry Machiavelli
British Airways pilot who supposedly saw AF1 on the way to Baghdad Thanksgiving... WH had to retract that this ever occurred when Brit Airways denied any such pilot/even existed. All for a little fluff propaganda story for "extra excitement". Same deal. Seems trivial but I think if people could become widely aware of this stuff it could help us a lot. Lying crooked/crooked lying indeed.
