CANBERRA, Australia - The unauthorized release by WikiLeaks three months ago of 90,000 classified documents about the U.S.-led Afghanistan campaign have not significantly harmed Australia's interests, a Defence Department task force said Tuesday.
The task force will now similarly examine around 400,000 secret documents about the Iraq war published over the weekend by the whistle-blower website founded by Australian Julian Assange, Defence Minister Stephen Smith said. Australia sent 2,000 troops to support U.S. and British forces in the 2003 Iraq invasion. "In general terms, the unauthorized release of any classified military documentation is a matter of most serious concern," Smith told parliament.
The government created the task force to determine whether the July 25 leak of documents related to U.S.-led forces in Afghanistan could endanger any of the 1,550 Australian troops in that country or their local supporters.
The task force reported that "the leaked documents have not had a direct or significant adverse impact on Australia's national interests."
