Mitch McConnell's remarks on 2012 draw White House ire
Edited on Tue Oct-26-10 09:47 PM by TomCADem
Source: LA Times

Reporting from Washington — The White House on Tuesday forcefully responded to comments from Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell, who suggested in an interview that his party's top goal in the new Congress would be ensuring President Obama is not reelected in 2012.

Speaking with National Journal magazine, McConnell discussed mistakes the GOP made after its 1994 election sweep, when it suffered "from some degree of hubris" and acted "as if the president was irrelevant and we would roll over him."

If Republicans are to enjoy a midterm triumph in 2010 as they did in 1994, McConnell said his party should say: "Those of you who helped make this a good day, you need to go out and help us finish the job."

Asked what that "job" was, McConnell explained that "the single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one-term president."

That's right. Its not about fixing the economy, lowering unemployment, or even keeping America safe. The single most important job for Republican leaders is to get President Obama out of office.

1. It's about the Black
They may feel that if he's a one term President it will be another 200 years before another African American is elected.

There is a lot of weight on President Obama besides trying to fix the mess w left this President and our country.

27. I think they would have done this to any Democratic President
Do you honestly think they would have been happier to cooperate with the white John Kerry or the white Hillary Clinton? I doubt they would have cooperated with the very white Dick Gephardt.

28. Yes, I do

I'm not that naive but, after the 60's and all these decades I thought our racial situation was improving and that we were past that. I have interacial married friends and AA friends. I grew up with mostly Puerto Rican and AA famlies as friends and neighbors.

I only saw one display of outright racism toward my girlfriend (in the latemid 90's) who is married to a black man and their baby. A woman in a restaurant mumbled something and gave us a look of disgust. I thought - ah, just one old lady stuck in a time warp.

Until Obama ran for President, Then I saw the ugly side of white people I thought I had known all my life. One I no longer speak to. I hear conversations at the hair cutter everywhere I'm stunned - we didn't move anywhere. They were all a bit calmer until President Obama. They hid it well but, it exists and it doesn't help for me to pretend it doesn't.

Suffice to say, I'm white I know what they say and what is in their evil hearts. It amazes me that they tell me these things knowing how I feel. Having given it some thought I guess they thought they could either change me or that I was just paying lip service.

During the campaign a black man and I were standing in a check out line we began to talk about Obama and we were having a lively chat about race. I told that i felt one of the problems in our country is that we don't talk about race, sex or politics. He handed me his card - he is a local radio show host and asked me to call into his show. I would love to but, I have a hearing problem and the phone is my nemesis. Started in my 20's so it's not old age :P

Yes, imo it' about race. It's because he wants to change the status quo and he's a Dem but, it's being AA that just sticks in their craw. I hope it's ok, I'm keeping that opinion until they prove otherwise.

33. Race is just the topping
The real issue is that they think that only Repugs can have power and refuse to accept it going to one not of their party, that he's not also of their race is just an added irritation. Look how they reviled Clinton, even accusing him of murder on two different occasions, with not one shred of evidence. They want to concentrate all the money and power in just a few hands and fuck the rest - and unforunately, they're doing a good job of eliminating the middle class and making that happen. Anyone who stands in their way is anathema, they just use the "color" thing to bait the racists.

24. Treason? This reckless charge always gets me going. By no
definition outside the realm of fantasy is this treason. You need to take Obama's Constitutional Law class and read the Article III, Section 3 definition of Treason.

When you cast aside the Constitution, you invite Presidential Impeachments for trivial matters.

37. You missed the point -Treason is the only crime defined within
the Constitution. There are specific criteria that shall be met or there is no treason. So I Repeat my valuable but free advice:

"You need to take Obama's Constitutional Law class and read the Article III, Section 3 definition of Treason."

Cause I'd really be amused to hear you try to fit the facts to the law. I love a good laugh.

31. The White House needs to develop a thicker skin
Ignore Mitch McConnell and his business as usual claptrap. IGNORE HIM and ignore all the rest of his party of idiots. Just do the job we elected you to do, Mr. Obama, and shove aside the people who are standing in your way.

Ignore their prattling. Ignore their obstructionism. They are not your friends and they never will be, no matter what. NEVER. NEVER.

Strong leaders do not get into catfights with opponents and obstructionists.

Your number one priority is to fix the job machine, Mr. Obama. Do that, and you'll find you've fixed a lot of other things, too.
