Senator Inhofe lands plane on closed runway
Source: Tulsa World

U.S. Sen. Jim Inhofe's exploits in the cockpit once again have landed him in the news.

The Oklahoma Republican last week landed his plane at an airport near his home on South Padre Island despite huge X's informing pilots that its runway was closed.

According to the Washington Post, Inhofe said he landed his plane ""well off to the side'' of workmen performing maintenance on the runway.

He blamed the story on an airport official who ""hates'' him.

"When he left Texas to return to Tulsa on Sunday, the veteran pilot used one of the airport's taxiways to take off, which reportedly can be an issue for the Federal Aviation Administration."

22. WPost on this
There were these huge (60 feet long by 10 feet wide) yellow X's on the main runway, which aren't there to mark the landing spot. The big signs were laid out to indicate that the runway was closed. There were workmen painting and doing general maintenance on the runway.

Inhofe, who was traveling with three others, told us Tuesday that he was "getting ready to land, then I saw a big X," and the workers and equipment. So he flew the six-seater over the workers and landed "well off to the side," he said.

Runway closures and other important information are highlighted in what's called a Notice to Airmen, or NOTAM, which all pilots are supposed to read before take-off. Inhofe said he "didn't have a NOTAM."

An airport official - "he hates me, I don't know why," Inhofe said - apparently was none too pleased with the use of a closed runway.

They want to control our live by instituting their religion as the 'national religion' when of course that is just them hiding behind their 'holy book' to force us all to live by their close-minded precepts, but when it comes to them the rules don't apply because they are rich and/or 'gods chosen people'. I realize Inhofe didn't say anything about religion but it is the same attitude do as I say not as I do.

Landing on a closed runway (the big 'X' means closed) is a violation of Federal Aviation Regulations (FAR) and grounds for discipline of the pilot.

74. The FAA and his fellow pilots know there is no excuse.
If you don't notice the huge X on the runway near the touchdown point you probably should not be at the controls of an airplane in the first place.

This really burns me because he's trying to avoid accountability and deflect for the inexcusable. Work was being done on the runway and the fleeing airport workers were close enough to be pelted by debris.

All this because he did not want the inconvenience of driving a few extra miles from an alternate airport. I know I'd have my license suspended for a similar mistake and this guy should be grounded too.

77. Lol. That's probably the best defense.
The only other alternative is "I'm a US senator landing on this closed runway and you'd better run or you are going to be confetti in a few seconds".

"I was drunk" sounds better.

78. We live in a time when total assholes and worthless shitbags act
as though they where dukes and duchesses. I just hope they all get piked soon, I hate the whole lot of them. Worthless and causing harm to America since they learned how to steal and lie.

they'd be taken away in handcuffs, and would lose their pilot license.

Republicans are too corrupted to lead.
