Kerry camp challenges Bush to debates

Bush spokesman: 'Finish the debate with himself'

Saying it's time to "raise the level of dialogue," Sen. John Kerry's presidential campaign called on President Bush's re-election campaign Thursday to agree to six debates in key battleground states.

"Democrats in Pennsylvania, Arizona, Washington, Ohio, Missouri and Florida plan to hold press conferences over the next several days to highlight the importance of a substantive discussion on issues affecting all Americans -- national security, homeland security and veterans' issues; education; environment and energy policies; the economy; health care; and equal opportunity for all," said campaign chair Jeanne Shaheen in a written statement.

Last month, Kerry called for issue-oriented debates, but the Bush campaign "has not responded," the Kerry campaign statement said.

Bush campaign spokesman Taylor Griffin told CNN Thursday, "The Bush-Cheney campaign looks for a vigorous debate at the appropriate time. But John Kerry should finish the debate with himself first -- being on both sides of each issue."

1. Debate a virtual bush -unh bring it on
I don’t know if it could be done legally but I think that Kerry ought to debate bush, even if bush is a no show. Bush’s place at the podium could be a monitor that pops up and use file video for the bush responses. I think this could be fun and productive and might force bush to put up or shut up.

2. that would be hilarious
I know there's one audio clip where Bush says... "I.... I'm not sure what that means."

Kerry could have a field day with it!

5. "bu$h-Cheney looks for a vigorous debate"
so they can run the other way, I says! The Chimp's handlers know he will get his simian ass handed to him in a debate. And I think even the Democrats realize that this time the gloves must come off.

Having said that, I don't believe bu$h will debate Kerry. His puppeteers will find some excuse to keep him from walking into a chainsaw.

6. LOL...
yea...there ya go...that's funny...

But ya know...Kerry should do a commercial standing at a podium and show an empty podium across from him...and have a saying..."on the issues...pResident Bush is a no show"...

I would love to see these two debate...but I don't think it will happen unless Chimpy get's a script first...

9. Move-On should host a debate.
Move-On or another organization should host and advertise a debate and invite all Presidential candidates to participate. Let whomever shows take part and make sure there are empty podiums for those that don't. They should publicise it far enough ahead that the candidates have time to shift their schedules.

Also there should be moderators able to use file footage and projections of documentation to put the candidates on the spot or to speak for the absent candidates.
