Police Consider More Arrests in Rand Paul Heckler Scuffle

Kentucky cops are considering charges against at least two more Rand Paul supporters caught on tape wrestling a political heckler to the ground while another man stomped on her head.

"At this point, the investigation is still ongoing," Lexington Police spokeswoman Sherelle Roberts told ABC News. "We're looking into other individuals who may have been involved in the assault and could get charged."

A short, 50 second video clip of the scuffle shows a handful of people surrounding Lauren Valle, 23, a paid activist for the liberal group MoveOn.org, as she is pushed to the ground Monday. The incident occurred as Rand was arrving for a debate with his Democratic opponent Jack Conway. The two men are campaigning for a Kentucky Senate seat.

One man in the video wearing a checkered shirt appears to wrestle Valle to the curb while a second man steps on her. The face of the man in the checkered shirt is partially visible, but neither man has yet been identified.

Seeing the video reminded me of the scene from "American History X" where Edward Norton's character stomped on the head of someone against a curb. Is this where we are headed? Where Americans are killing other Americans over ideology? Isn't that the very same thing happening in the Middle East? Maybe we aren't as civilized a country as we believe we are, maybe we've fallen so far from the high ideals set forth in our Constitution, maybe we have strayed away from the dream into this nightmare.

When the idea of community is who you keep out and not who you welcome in, or pushing fear as a worthy political value, we have become something our fore-fathers would not recognize and actually recoil in horror at who we are. There is an insanity in what is going on and we are leaderless. Why? Because there are no cooler heads prevailing. Fear is the coin of the campaign, fear is the apocalyptic herd riding off the cliff, fear is getting the job done. The job? Destroying America in the name of winning, in the name of protecting those that have from those that have no chance.

We are walking a very dangerous line here. There is a level of anger here and if the wrong people capture that anger we could be in for a long dark period in our history which will make the civil war look tame by comparison.
