Trainee detectives to study Facebook
Source: ITN

Detectives will be taught how to track down killers and other criminals on Facebook, Twitter and other social networks, police leaders have said.

Sweeping changes have been made to training for thousands of student investigators to bring their work into the 21st century.

They include new information on how to track down suspects through social networking sites, where wanted people may reveal valuable clues.

Updated training exercises also examine how to gather the best information from computers, mobile phones and other electronic devices.

1. It is amazing just how stupid people can be
when they get in front of a computer with the Facebook site logged in, isn't it? My lady spends some time there every day, and she can't believe what the teen and twentysomething kids of our friends put up on their pages. Hope they don't need to get real jobs someday...

3. It truly is amazing what you can find...

I was snooping. I admit it. There was a devastating car accident in my area, and
I was concerned about how one of the victims was doing. She was a woman my age, and
her four children had been killed in the accident. I searched her last name on FB,
found her relatives and literally, found out every medical update and all sorts
of information. It was like being at the hospital every day and knowing every
detail of her condition.

I'm sure what I was doing was not ethical, but I was cheering for her every step
of the way. She was in a coma for months--but is now home and rebuilding her life.

People do not realize how much information is out there about them. Even if YOU
aren't on FB--your friends and relatives probably are. And people can glean
all sorts of information from that alone.

FB isn't just for high-school and college students anymore. Boomers are on FB. So,
chances are your parents, and possibly your grandparent,s have FB pages. And sometimes
they post pictures or tidbits of which you might not be aware. So, if someone wanted
to find out what you were doing for Thanksgiving--they just might be able to unearth
it from looking at your relatives' pages. Crazy huh?

Look at how much info was gleaned from these head stompers. They had signed up for
Meetup.com groups and FB pages. All of the messages they left on boards, and other
personal info from their FB page provided loads of info about who these people are.

6. Heck my 80 something year old aunt is on facebook
as are everyone else in my family down to the youngest great nephews. It is a great way to keep in touch but yes, very much info is given out by the younger ones.

4. All my info on the web is in my dog's name.
He has email accounts, briefly had a Twitter account, has a netflix account name.
I am trying to figure out how to get him a credit card.

5. Plus, now people can post their current location on facebook
I believe that's the "places" application. For one thing, nobody really cares that you are at Chopstix restaurant right now, and also, why would you want to announce that to 200 people? It's like announcing "hey, right now would be a good time to break into my house".

9. That's actually happened, too.
Auto-reply messages people use when they are on vacation are also frequently WAY too detailed.

I sent a message to someone the other day and got an auto-reply that told me where they'd gone, for how long, and why.

Not smart.

7. Right to Privacy? I wish they'd use it
Every time I hear someone climb up on a soap box and start shouting about how policy XYZ is a violation of the right of privacy, I find myself wishing people would exercise it.

Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, and God knows how many other means of bragging about yourself floating about have destroyed any hope for privacy. I truely, truely Do Not Care about your life, your social events, where you are, or what you're doing every second of the day.

Some days I feel like cutting the power to the house, buring the TV in the back yard, and shooting my laptop.
