A suspicious package found on a UPS plane stopped in Britain was initially tested and found not to contain explosives, an FBI source said on Friday.

U.S. authorities were investigating "potentially suspicious items" on Friday on cargo planes that landed at airports in Newark, New Jersey, and Philadelphia, the Transportation Security Administration said.

Suspect Package Found On Plane In UK

The package was discovered on a United Parcel Service jet, which had stopped to refuel at East Midlands Airport in Derby while flying from Yemen to Chicago.

It was apparently made from a converted ink toner cartridge, which contained white powder and had wires sticking out.

=snip=

The cartridge was not addressed to anyone in the UK, and would have travelled on to North America.

The discovery has sparked a major alert in the US.

2. Or voting booth . . .
I don't recall an attack on polling places in the US.

Considering that the hills have armed drug growers, meth labs, moonshiners, wild fires, and other assorted scary animals, the polling places seem safer than the hills.

9. Home Secretary Theresa May confirmed the package found in the UK contained explosive material.
Home Secretary Theresa May confirmed the package found in the UK contained explosive material.

"The package which originated in Yemen was removed for forensic examination by UK experts. That examination continues," she said.

"At this stage I can say that the device did contain explosive material. But it is not yet clear that it was a viable explosive device. The forensic work continues."

All direct flights from Yemen to the UK have been suspended, the Home Secretary added.
