Dubai cops: Bomb plot was a 'professional' job with 'hallmarks' of al-Qaida

A parcel bomb found on a cargo flight from Yemen to the United States was put together in a "professional" way and the plot bore all the hallmarks of al-Qaida, Dubai police said Saturday.

The parcel, which was intercepted in Dubai Friday, contained explosive pentaerythritol trinitrate (PETN) in a printer and cartridge, police said.

PETN is the material used in a failed plot to bomb an airline over the U.S. in December 2009.

"The parcel was prepared in a professional way where a closed electrical circuit was connected to a mobile phone SIM card hidden inside the printer," the statement said.

Explosive material found on UK plane
Sat Oct 30 2010 08:12:59
Home Secretary Theresa May has confirmed a package found on a cargo plane at East Midlands Airport contained explosive material.

Although it is not yet clear whether it was a "viable explosive device".

Security staff discovered printer cartridges with wires attached at cargo hubs in the UK and Dubai. They reportedly contained the powerful explosive PETN.

It has sparked a major international terror alert as the planes were bound for North America.

The packages were addressed to synagogues in the American city of Chicago and US President Barack Obama has described this as a "credible terrorist threat".

The UK government's emergency planning committee, Cobra, will meet again today and an update will be given afterwards

5. They want the crazies to take Congress because they want to destroy America.
George W. Bush did far, far more to destroy America than al Qaeda ever could, which is why "Osama" gave the Republicans a ringing anti-endorsement for several cycles running.

They're almost certainly not as keen on President Obama and the Democrats because in the past two years we have re-focused our efforts on hunting al Qaeda down, instead of getting a few wealthy benefactors richer from unending and inconclusive warfare.

So they endorsed McCain, it caused a furor. But them publicly endorsing McCain is to effectively help Obama... I can't ever remember them doing an anti-endorsement ("Oh knows I hope they don't elect Republicans because Republicans are so good at killing us"). So again, if their "endorsements" are some sort of propaganda master stroke then it would appear they prefer Obama. Really though they aren't that organized and they do prefer Republicans, but they're far from uniform or organized about it.

NOW, I could be failing to remember some examples here, if so I'd be glad to be wrong.

4. See, this is why you don't just start bombing other countries
We fly 'Predator' drones over Pakistan and Yemen, almost daily, if not daily, and they are shocked, shocked! When these countries have the audacity to get pissed off at our military mis-adventures.

But that's right. I forgot. We're America, we're exceptional, and when we bomb people, we're only 'liberating' them, and they should thank us for that. :sarcasm:

Why were the wires attached to hubs? Why was there explosive in the hubs?

9. I stil can't figure out
what was going on. They found the bomb-like packages in the planes but didn't notice them until they were over the atlantic? Then started escorting them with fighter jets?

If they found them in the cargo hubs then why did they let the planes fly with them inside. The whole scenario... like most of their terra events makes no sense. Looks like just another excuse to bring in a draconian law or two and disrupt traveling worse than it already is.

18. neither of the packages that were determined to be bombs made it over the Atlantic
one was found in Dubai and the other in the Midlands UK after coming from Cologne Germany. The cargo hubs refer to distribution centers for cargo as opposed to passenger hubs not a place in a plane. Hope that makes sense. :)

11. UK says Yemen bomb could have brought down plane
LONDON/SANAA Oct 30 (Reuters) - A bomb found on a U.S.-bound cargo plane was powerful enough to bring down an aircraft, British authorities said on Saturday, as forces in Yemen searched for suspected al Qaeda militants behind a plot to bomb Jewish targets in Chicago.

"I can confirm the device was viable and could have exploded. The target may have been an aircraft and had it detonated the aircraft could have been brought down," British Home Secretary Theresa May said.

13. Hallmarks of Al Qaida ?
Edited on Sat Oct-30-10 12:20 PM by fedsron2us
Makes it sound like some sort of terrorist antique roadshow.

Have bombers taken to stamping their goods like 18th Century craftsmen ?

BTW PETN or its equivalent is the explosive of choice for practically every terrorist group in the world if they can lay their hands on it. It is a major component of Semtex and was widely used by the IRA in attacks against the British from the mid 1980s.

16. Inlaid wood, brass flourishes and a mahogony veneer!
Apparently the bomb exhibited the kind of craftsmanship you only get from a select few artisan bomb-makers. As such the resale value will be secure and it will certainly gain in a down economy like this where people flock to secure investments.

Also there is the printer ink angle, since it came in a printer cartridge there will be a solid resale value there as a used cartridge which can be refilled.

17. the final destinations were Synagogues in Chicago according the news reports I've heard
the package that made it to the UK was shipped from Yemen to Cologne Germany to the Midlands UK before being found, but before going on to the final destination.
