Al Jazeera's Dan Nolan, reporting from Dubai, said the airline had not yet revealed whether the package was transported on board a passenger flight.
"Qatar Airways has a small percentage of its business where it uses cargo flights," he said.
"There's only one cargo flight per week from Sanaa to Doha so you would think the chances that it was on a passenger flight are quite high."
The airline also stated that "the explosives discovered were of a sophisticated nature whereby they could not be detected by X-ray screening or trained sniffer dogs," and were only discovered after an intelligence tip off.
It said that under international aviation regulations, it is not the responsibility of the country in which the cargo transits, in this case Qatar, to X-ray or inspect the cargo. This responsibility belongs to the country from where the consignment originates.
