D'ough! Krispy Kreme going bust (Australia)
Edited on Sun Oct-31-10 07:02 PM by denem
Source: Sydney Morning Herald

The Krispy Kreme doughnut chain has entered voluntary administration because of poor sales at some stores.

The locally owned Australian arm of Krispy Kreme has 50 sites across the east coast that employ a total of 650 staff...

"Krispy Kreme has excellent brand recognition and good turnover and profitability in its better stores," director John McGuigan said in a statement.

"However several factors, including location, sales declines, high rents and high distribution costs, have meant that a number of stores are losing money."

$2.80 for a single plain donut gets you excellent brand recognition in Australia, for all the wrong reasons.

5. ONE doughnut for three bucks?
Aren't these things the size of a quarter?

7. I was going to make a really snide comment about how those are *AUSTRALIAN* dollars
...until I actually looked it up. Per www.xe.com, 2.80 AUD = 2.76838 USD.

So yea, there. It's only $2.77 for that plain donut in good old American dollars. Oh, wait... Man, that is a lot of cash for fried sugar.

10. The "craze" lasted about 6 months
Not a big doughnut country. Aussies are more into European style pastries.

Starbucks doesn't do too well here for the same reason.

16. What?
You mean Australia is losing interest in an aspect of American culture as quickly as America lost interest in Australian culture 30 years ago? Such irony...

20. www.xe.com? scary!
Ok it is just a currency exchange calculator site, not the main page for Xe Services, the company formerly known as Blackwater. The site name just raised some caution, that's all.

:hi:

26. Maybe the hole is all I can afford. Amazing. When I was a kid, there was a Krispy Kreme factory
Edited on Tue Nov-02-10 08:02 AM by herbm
and the donuts were $.12 ea. Creme filled were $.15. This was in the sixties so there is more at work here than inflation. In Chicago when they opened there in '97 there were beemers and mercs backed up for blocks to get them. Go figure. Guess the Australians aren't getting taken in.

4. Might as well just open a box of sugar and eat that,
In my opinion, that's what a Krispy Kreme doughnut is akin to..

Just like it would be better to injest a can of salt instead of eating anything at Olive Garden, as the salt is better from the can...

My food analogies for today, lol..

12. I spent one day in Canada. I went to Butchart Gardens and Tim Horton's.
Now, Canada is my favorite country. Universal health care? Pshaw, I want Timbits.

14. And how gorgeous is Butchart Gardens? I loved the quarry. Yes BC is amazing.
The para-transport buses there pick up 1) people with disabilities 2) cycling enthusiasts and drive them to where they want to go; which is a sweet juxtaposition of people typical of British Columbia.

22. Now THAT is a great idea!
from the country that gave us insulin, hockey, Dan Aykroyd, etc.

That would work really well here in CA where there are many cycling enthusiasts, and TPTB tend to pay more attention to them than to us.

the one closest to us has been around for well over 20 years...
Are people getting tired of (gasp) donuts? What a world!
