Sun lay offs 3,300 amid huge losses
Sun Microsystems dropped several bombs on Silicon Valley and Wall Street early Friday, announcing plans to lay off 3,300 people amid huge losses and a massive $1.95 billion settlement of Sun's long-running litigation with Microsoft.

Nice Cusp, more likely on the edge of Niagara Falls in a decrepit wooden barrel

3. Sun has bigger problems than the Bush economy
They're much like DEC -- Digital Equipment Corporation -- of beloved memory. They introduced (in a commercial sense, anyway) technologies that gave them a huge boost at first, but now that everyone else has seen the advantages in those technologies and has gone into competition with Sun, they no longer have the field to themselves.

They might well wither away and get absorbed by someone else, as happened to DEC.

And Netscape, another example of a similar process.

6. You're analogy doesn't apply to Netscape.
They had the misfortune of being in Microshit's crosshairs. In fact, that's what started the Justice Dept. investigation of Micro$oft.

8. Uh oh. A "cusp" is a high point.
Or, to be more precise, the point at which a curve reverses direction.

So, if we're IN a "recovery" now (going up) does this mean it's now going to reverse direction? IOW, is this the *best* it's gonna get?

9. One of those laid off is my nephew. However, he knew this was
coming and got another job with Sun in Portland, OR (where I live). Somehow I feel he is the one of the VERY few lucky ones who have another job lined up.

10. Good for your nephew, I know so many people without jobs right now or
who've had to take lower paying jobs.
