Police: Wisconsin Student Changes Story

MADISON, Wis. - A college student who said she was abducted from her apartment has changed her story, saying she taken from somewhere else instead, police said Friday.

According to police, Audrey Seiler said she just wanted to "be alone."

She initially told police she was abducted at knifepoint from outside her apartment early Saturday. Assistant Police Chief Noble Wray said Friday she changed her story when investigators confronted her with inconsistencies in her account.

Seiler then told police a man had abducted her at knifepoint, but from somewhere else in the city, Wray said. He declined to elaborate.

1. Sounds fishy!
Check this:

"The state employee who found Audrey Seiler in a marsh Wednesday had also encountered the missing college student there on Monday and Tuesday, a television station reported, citing a "high-level police source."

WISC-TV's Joel DeSpain said Ardis Virnig, the Department of Revenue employee who spotted Seiler while walking on a nature trail during the noon hour, spoke with the 20-year-old UW sophomore, who reportedly told her she went to the marsh to relax.

The woman told a 911 dispatcher she also saw Seiler on Monday and Tuesday, the television stations reported, apparently not connecting her right away with the missing UW sophomore who had become the focus of local and national media attention."

11. We'll See, Won't We?
I would imagine the hospital took blood samples at some point.

PS - I'm a she.

3. I hate speculate here
but from what I've heard, this has a lot of the earmarks on an on-setting mental health problem. Many people later diagnosed with Paranoid Schizophrenia first start displaying symptoms in their early twenties, and sometimes the symptoms are as dramatic as this.

I wish her and her family peace.

4. I've been thinking something along those lines too
Yes it is tough to speculate but it doesn't seem to be as it first appeared. We will see. Good luck to her no matter how this works out.

Of all the missing persons cases they could have picked the pack journalists may have picked the wrong one.

6. Just out of curiosity--what's a psychiatric test?
I didn't really know there were any such, except maybe for the Beck Depression Inventory.

7. MMPI-Minnesota Multi-phasic Personailty Inventory
It's a test that asks a bunch of questions and comes up with a psych profile. I've never taken one, and am not qualified to administer one, but I have read evaluations based on the use of the test. I can't really comment without knowing what questions are asked.

Personally, I'd rather get to know someone the long way then to label them based on a questionaire. A friend of mine once had to take this test and he refers to the questions as inane, like "Would you rather be a tree or a flower".

19. I didn't know the MMPI-2 was a psychiatric test, since
psychiatrists are unqualified interpret it. It's purely a psychological instrument, based on psychometric principles. Actually, as a psychologist I've administered probably 2000-2500 of them, and find it a very useful tool, but it's not a psychiatric tool.

9. Great minds think alike.
I was wondering the same thing.

I also wonder if she doesn't have a drug problem that might be contributing to an underlying mental health problem. I hope her family will get her evaluated ASAP.

8. No suspect per CNN
Watching a press conference right now...No suspect at large, items Seiler said were used to hold her were proven to be bought by Seiler herself prior to incident, story is essentially bogus.

10. Funny thing is...
She's apparently a "straight A" student. I suppose she did it out of mental instability or she's seeking attention. If it's proven to be the latter of the two, she probably needs to be charged with something for wasting all the resources on her lie lest others try the same thing to get attention...

17. Latest on CNN
They're not even looking for a suspect anymore

http://www.cnn.com/2004/US/Midwest/04/02/missing.student/index.html

MADISON, Wisconsin (CNN) -- Police have stopped the search for a suspect in the case of a University of Wisconsin student who said she was abducted, Madison's Assistant Police Chief Noble Wray said at a Friday news conference.

"Due to continuing inconsistences ... and a lack of any evidence to support her allegations ... we do not believe that there is a supect at large, period," Wray said.

Wray cited inconsistencies in 20-year-old Audrey Seiler's story that led police to question her claim.

...snip...

Asked whether authorities were planning to press charges against her, Wray said, "I think it's a little bit early for us to say that. We still need to talk to all the detectives."

...snip...

Over the next four days, hundreds of police, relatives and community members searched for her. Seiler was found Wednesday afternoon after a passerby saw her in a marsh about two miles from campus and called police.

Seiler had said she did not know her abductor, whom she described as a white man in his late 20s or early 30s and about 6 feet tall, wearing a black sweatshirt, black cap and jeans.

Asked whether her actions represented a cry for help, Wray said, "It's difficult for me to speculate, in terms of what was her mental state or intent."

Hey, at least she didn't pull a Susan Smith and describe a black abductor...

18. My guess is she wanted the attention
Personality disorder, perhaps.
But I think mild.
Do not charge her with a crime.
She needs kindess - as we all do.
