The Oregonian's prediction: John Kitzhaber wins Oregon governor race
Source: The Oregonian

Former Gov. John Kitzhaber will win the governor’s race, The Oregonian projects, giving the Democrat a history-making third term.

Although Republican Chris Dudley continues to hold a slim lead, mathematical calculations based on statewide voting trends show Kitzhaber is likely to overtake him and win by about 10,000 votes out of 1.4 million cast. The newspaper’s projections show Kitzhaber winning by 49 percent to 48 percent, which is outside the margin for automatic recount.

1. That's a huge relief.
Dudley sucked as a center and would've sucked as governor.

2. Snooze you lose
I just logged on to post this but got beat to the punch. I live in Portland and the thought of Dudley as Governor sickened me (though I never thought he would actually be elected). Our friend Kitz could very well be white house material if he pulls Oregon out of the mess we are in.

4. It sounds like 20% of Multnomah County's votes are not counted yet
with Kitzhaber down 10k statewide. almost all the remaining votes to count come from the Portland area.

Kitzhaber's margin there, if it's the same as the rest of the county, should be 23k votes.

do the math and it would put him over by about 10k-13k votes.

5. Results as of 5:18pm local time

John Kitzhaber (Democrat) 649,592 48.39%
Greg Kord (Constitution) 19,013 1.42%
Wes Wagner (Libertarian) 17,404 1.30%
Chris Dudley (Republican) 653,716 48.69%
Write-in Votes 2,779 0.21%

Kitzhaber is now only 4100 votes down. The bulk of the uncounted votes are from Multnomah County (urban Portland)
and Lane County (Eugene), both of which are heavily democratic and where the vote has been running 2:1 for Kitzhaber.
I think Kitzhaber is going to pull it off, narrowly.

J.

6. The kind of narrow margin that makes you glad to have voted
I'll be nervous until the finish, but I think it is in the bag. Dudley would have been such a bupke.

9. Kitz wins. Dudley clanks another one.
Tons of out-of-state ca$h couldn't turn the race.

I love Oregon.

Sweet.

12. This reminds me of 2002, when the count was seesawing between
Mannix (grr) and Kulongoski all evening.

But whew!

Kitzhaber was a terrific governor and prevented a lot of horrible Republicanite bills from being enacted. I think he vetoed 50 bills one year.
