Mass Gov Romney mulling way to stop gay weddings | Boston Globe
Mulling way to stop gay weddings
As SJC appeal ruled out, Romney eyes his options

By Scott S. Greenberger
and Raphael Lewis, Globe Staff, 4/2/2004

LITTLETON -- Rebuffed by Attorney General Thomas F. Reilly, Governor Mitt Romney acknowledged yesterday that he won't be able to get a judicial stay to block weddings of same-sex couples beginning May 17. But the governor emphasized that he is exploring other avenues to block the issuance of marriage licenses to gay couples.

"He's made his decision; I'm not going to pursue that further," Romney said of Reilly's refusal to seek a delay of the Supreme Judicial Court's ruling legalizing gay marriage, which takes effect on May 17. "Of course, I'm also considering other options. I don't have anything to report in that regard, but stay tuned."

Lawmakers and activists on both sides of the issue suggest that Romney may be weighing several options, including an executive order to block the issuance of licenses to gay couples; proposing a law to prevent issuance of those licenses; or backing another bill, being pushed this week, that would abolish marriage entirely and create civil unions for heterosexual couples, as well as gay couples.

it is the only solution with a separation of church and state

Take the religion out of what should be a civil contract, for all individuals, regardless of religious affiliation OR GENDER.

(There was a great piece in the Nation on this a couple weeks back I'll have to track down.)

on edit: tiny spelling problem

7. If he wants to follow Napoleon...
..in this regard, more power to him.

Of course, an invasion of Russia I would have trouble backing.

13. That would be "OK" with me however.......
the straights would be pissed that that thier marriages were just civil unions, therefore get no federal benefits. Alas, with Romney, it is just another bait and switch. See, what he will do, if the constitutional amendment passes (which it won't) then he will just turn all those hetero civil unions into marriages. Why can't he just leave us alone? Mitt, your national stage is NOT waiting!

5. Romneyus Augustus...
has changed his mind no less than four times so far about this issue and every time it has been in order to impress an out-of-state constituency of wowsers and barn burners.
I rant on about the subject at:

8. Shouldn't he be focused on the economy, safety in his state etc.
I would be outraged with his focus if I lived in that state.

I was going to ask "How did this guy get elected in MA, anyway?" This executive order business is scary, but, as noted above, making all marriages civil unions would be fine. People can get civilly "married" and have separate religious ceremonies if they so choose.

have anything better to do with his time? Does everyone in Mass. have a job? Healthcare? Quality education? A place to live? Food to eat? No???? Then get back to work you idiot and stay out of people's personal lives!

On edit: I just caught this line in the story: " ... backing another bill, being pushed this week, that would abolish marriage entirely and create civil unions for heterosexual couples, as well as gay couples."

You know, that's the answer to this whole mess. We all have civil unions ... period.

16. Can Kerry and Teddy step in as US Senators and stop this madness?
It would make them shine in the Democratic base if they could and would.
