Despite jobs boost, Kerry still blasts Bush economic record

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry (news - web sites) welcomed figures released showing the creation of 308,000 jobs in March, but the Massachusetts senator blasted President George W. Bush (news - web sites)'s economic record.

"After three years of punishing job losses, the one month job creation announced today is welcome news for America's workers. I hope it continues," Kerry said.

"But for too many families, living through the worst job recovery since the Great Depression has been, and continues to be, far too painful," he said.

"With nearly 2.6 million private sector jobs lost during the Bush presidency, Americas families need and deserve a new economic strategy." <snip>

"In every single month of this administration, we havent seen the creation of a single manufacturing job in America," Kerry said,"Thats why Ive proposed a strategy that revitalizes our manufacturing sector and puts us on track to create 10 million new jobs in the next four years."

1. BBC WS this AM....financial guy from US
explaining how the 300,000 jobs was really more like 200,000...

Some recouping of lost construction jobs during bad weather (about 70,000, but making up for the previous losses and about 13,000 in another sector ( forget which), 0 manufacturing jobs added....

so it comes to really only 200,000 jobs.

Also said these numbers are about a year later than what you would normally see during a recovery after a recovery...

2. some math re: 300,000 jobs
The number of people who worked part time for economic reasons rose to 4.7 million in March, up from 4.4 million the previous month.

4.7 miL - 4.4 miL = 300,000 new part time jobs.

5. Create jobs by activating reserves and guardsmen?
Surely when these guys report to active duty many are replaced by new hires. I wonder how that shows up on these job-creation numbers?

7. Is this because of the new 'definition' of manufacturing ?
Someone who works in fast food, previously a service industry, is now considered a 'manufacturer'.

This was discussed (quite humorously) by Charlie Rangell on CSpan about a month or so ago ....

What job boost? Do these sound like good middle-class/upper-class jobs? Not to me. It is my understanding that the economy must create *at least* 100,000 jobs per month just to keep up with incoming new, young workers (i.e. break even).
