Police: Abduction Story Doesn't Add Up (UW student Seiler)

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/missing_student

MADISON, Wis. - Police said Friday a college student's tale of being abducted doesn't add up and they don't believe there is an abductor at large. They said there was evidence she planned her disappearance.

"We do not believe there is a suspect at large, period," Assistant Police Chief Noble Wray said.

Seiler told police her abductor used duct tape, rope and a knife against her.

But Wray said police obtained videotape of Seiler buying some of those items at a local store weeks earlier.

She also used her computer to search Web sites for information on Madison parks and the extended weather forecast, suggesting she had planned her disappearance, Wray said.

Wray said the search of her computer also indicated someone had used it during the four days Seiler was missing, and at least two witnesses said they had seen her walking freely in the city during that time.

1. I read somewhere that her parents were on FAUX news
giving interviews before she was found.

Another Susan Smith comes to mind, minus children death. Maybe she just had an abortion? Something doesn't add up I agree. Who knows????

2. My wife knew someone who did this in college to avoid a test
The girl wasn't ready for the test so she staged her disappearance. Problem was that she went across state lines which brought the FBI into it. No coverage, she wasn't very pretty-this was back in the 80's.

Best wishes to her and I am curious as to what was going on. The abortion thing was something I hadn't thought of, there was a thread ealier where several of us thought she might be exhibiting the early signs of a mental issue. Whatever it is best of luck to her.

6. Well, she's a 4.00 student so it's probably not a test-dodge. And she
planned this all in advance, purchasing things like duct tape and drugs to make it look even more like an abduction. I think she should be charged.

12. Sometimes honors students can be under a lot of pressure
Edited on Fri Apr-02-04 04:18 PM by Lisa
I've noticed that in my classes, many of the students who freak out about not getting full marks on a test, or needing an extension on an assignment, are the ones who are used to getting A's -- and would be earning excellent grades regardless. I had one enormous guy getting in my face last semester because he "needed an A or A+ for law school and A- wasn't good enough to win a scholarship". The B and C students tend not to fret as much if they aren't ready for an exam, or are late picking up the instructions for an assignment.

p.s. Of course, I know nothing about this particular case, so I'm reserving comment until more information is available.

3. Had a hunch ever since...
Edited on Fri Apr-02-04 03:27 PM by robnycny
...CNN showed security camera footage of her leaving the dorm/apt building at 2:30AM and they were speculating she was running errands. "Errands" at 2:30AM?!?!

So much wasted time on this ridiculous hoax. :eyes:

on edit: just read underpants post - and yes, I would certainly wish her well if this is related to mental illness, or something traumatic that had taken place.

8. She's obviously needs some serious help
It sounds like there are some real mental health problems going on here - could be schizophrenia, since that tends to show up in the early 20s. I certainly hope her parents get her medical help.

14. its unclear when she staged it
Was it her plan all along (since last Sat 2AM)?
Or when she subsequently saw her photo plastered everywhere and/or learned that dozens from Rockford MN were in Madison searching for her, did she then decide to stage abduction as a way to save face.
Where did she spend four nights?
And how was she using her computer as reported in strib?
Was it a laptop or was she actually returning to her apartment post-disappearance?

I know its not deserving of national press but from a local Twin Cities/Madison angle it remains pretty fascinating if not mostly sad.

15. back in 2000 or 2001
I was a grad student at the Univ. of Kansas working for the student paper. We had a female student disappear during spring break,(she stayed on campus to work and do research), and I remember her being gone for at least 3 weeks. She was found alive in a wooded area not far from campus (butt naked as i recall)...The parents, police, and campus administration really hushed up after she was found, and the paper never found out where she was or who she was with

16. She was supposedly bound with duct tape, rope and sedated with cold meds.
Edited on Sat Apr-03-04 03:42 AM by maveric
But a store surveillance video showed her buying such items.
Just heard it on CNN so it must be true.
