Argentines rally against crime wave
AP , BUENOS AIRES
Saturday, Apr 03, 2004,Page 6

More than 100,000 people marched through Argentina's capital city on Thursday to protest crime, shouting "Justice! Justice!" in one of the country's largest demonstrations in years.

Argentines lit thousands of white candles outside Congress and held up photos of victims of the recent surge in ransom kidnappings, street holdups and robberies that has become an overriding concern in this South American nation of 36 million people.

Many left work early to join the protest, and thousands more turned out for smaller demonstrations in cities across Argentina.

Juan Carlos Blumberg, whose 23-year-old son, Axel, was killed last week after being seized by kidnappers demanding a ransom, led the large but peaceful protest.

2. You have no idea
My cousin, who just emigrated from Argentina to Canada, did so after three people on her block were murdered when their homes were robbed. Its insane.

4. Actually, I think Argentina's
a lot safer than Brazil. There was a tremendously bad crime wave - really unprecedented in a country like Argentina, which has always fancied itself part of the first world, even though it isn't. But I think you'll find that day to day, year to year, crime is a hell of a lot worse in Rio. When the economy stabilizes, as it will, things will get back to normal. In Brazil, however, crime is normal.
