France detains Congo police chief

The head of the Republic of Congo's police has been freed following his arrest in France for alleged crimes against humanity.
Jean-Francois Ndengue, the head of Congo's national police, was detained on Thursday, but freed late on Friday after claiming diplomatic immunity.

He had been arrested in the town of Meaux, close to Paris.

Mr Ndengue is being investigated in connection with the disappearance of hundreds of Congolese exiles in 1999.

A judge on Friday had ordered that Mr Ndengue be remanded in custody in a Paris prison and placed him under judicial investigation.

But Mr Ndengue's lawyer Jean-Marc Florand successfully argued that the police chief held a diplomatic passport and therefore enjoyed diplomatic immunity.....

The President of the Republic of Congo, Denis Sassou Nguesso, and other ministers and military figures are also named in the investigation....
