CO Down man Gary Buchanan began a new mission in war-stricken Liberia this week where he will be in charge of aid convoys in a country that remains devastated after 14 years of civil war...
In between his missions in the Balkans, Gary worked in Zaire and in Rwanda (1994-1995) as a relief administrator, distributing food and other aid to 150,000 Rwandan refugees in the Goma camp on the border.
The Red Cross is appealing for almost 20m euro to fund its operations in Liberia for 2004. Key projects include finding the parents of over 2,000 children who were separated from their families during the war.
However, these children are only a small percentage of the hundreds of thousands of people who fled their homes during the war...
