Pelosi Blast Republicans on Tax Cuts as WH Negotiates
Source: Politico

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) is blasting Republicans to the bitter end on tax cuts.

Even as the White House is trying to broker a compromise with House and Senate Republicans on extending the Bush-era tax cuts, Pelosi slammed Republicans on Wednesday afternoon for pushing to extend tax breaks for those who earn above $250,000

“You hear talk about extending tax cuts for the wealthiest people in America. And those tax cuts we are told should not be paid for; $700 billion dollars in tax cuts for the top 2 percent in our country. And our Republican colleagues say we should do that and we should not pay for it. We should add that $700 billion dollars to the deficit,” she told dozens of unemployed workers who came to the Capitol to lobby for passing an extension of unemployment benefits.

“But when it comes to the unemployment insurance and just the renewal we want to have would cost $18 billion … they’re saying that has to be paid for. Have to pay for unemployment insurance, we don’t have to pay for tax cuts for the rich,” she said.

She brought up the cuts as she was calling for passing extensions of the benefits, which will expire on Dec. 31.

“That’s part of the debate that’s going on here,” she said.

1. God, it's really that simple....
She put it as aggressively and as simply as possible so that anyone can understand. Why is this so hard for anyone else in a leadership position within the democratic party?

Let's hope the news media plays it with the same urgency as if a politician or pol's family member is on a made-for-entertainment TV show.

104. As far as negotiating - maybe he could do less of that but
the reality of American politics is that we have two parties and when one chooses to act as a wall against everything the president tries to do, what we're going to get is compromised legislation. Are you totally unaware of what's been happening? The options seem to always be, either rail against the Republicans while refusing to compromise and get nothing which might be a moral victory of sorts or essentially get a wedge in the door, getting what he can and hoping to build on it later. Certainly a case can be made for either strategy.
As for him speaking out against extending the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy - he did it all through the last campaigns - just a few weeks ago. I hate all these compromises too but I blame those who are truly to blame - the Republican party, the "tea party", the blue dogs, the totally biased news media and the left who seems to abandon ship at the slightest difficulty - we seem to choose to blame one person rather than look at the big picture and get out there and fight back. I think if more progressive legislation reached Pres. Obama's desk no one would deny he would sign it.

117. Don't you think at this point he would know they won't work with him?
He's appointed a Republican-led commission that came up with a plan that the Republicans would, under a Republican POTUS, think was awesome. They will even fight him on these recommendations, probably by saying they don't go far enough to screw us over. Why not just stand up and say "We'd like to do all these things, but the Republicans are blocking it all". And let the people's ire convince their worthless reps to quit blocking everything. Instead, we get these compromises that make things worse for the most part. For instance, I was as thrilled as anyone to see children have health insurance that couldn't be denied by insurance companies for pre-existing conditions. Yet, as predicted by many here and elsewhere, the insurance companies would just not offer a policy like that and voila! problem solved. And that is exactly what they have done.

We don't have to compromise at all. The Repukes never did and they held all three branches of gov't. We had 3 and did everything the cons wanted! I don't feel we are getting a wedge in the door on most things. In fact, we are going BACKWARDS on a bunch of stuff I never thought a Dem president would do.

No, I'm not completely unaware of what's going on. I don't agree that compromise is our only solution.

123. There are a few spots where I disagree with you -
First, Is the commission republican led? I thought one guy is R. and one is D.. But that aside, my understanding is that something has to be done about the national deficit or we risk the entire financial future of the country and its standing in the world. While it might be nice to imagine going back to a simpler time and just dropping out of what is an entirely too complicated world,(I would personally love that) that's not what would likely happen. What would happen is if we don't deal with it now, our children will and the hardships they'd have to bear would likely be harsher. Look at Iceland and Ireland. Some of the things in the commission report are wrong - ie, raising retirement age but some are interesting such as cuts in military spending, a simpler tax code and more targeted social programs.
Second, while there are going to be some insurance companies that refuse to play by the rules as far as the new healthcare bill, that's not a reason to not institute changes. I believe there are methods written into the law to for the first time ensure some control over what these companies do. And, this is the point of the exchanges, to offer some choice to people. It was likely a mistake to have allowed private/for-profit companies so much power in the first place but we have to deal with what we're given and try to make it work. The new law will require that 80%(?) of money paid in go to actual healthcare costs - How is that bad? From my perspective, my son who graduated college and is still unemployed can go on my insurance - That's a huge deal. Do you know how much it costs to purchase insurance on your own?
How exactly did we do everything the "cons" wanted? We got a healthcare bill. We got financial reform. None of these bills are perfect but to do nothing but wait for the people's "ire" to force change is nonsensical to me - Where was this "ire" when it came to the healthcare bill - it was all coming from the tea party and it was all in favor of doing even less than what was done.

We need a progressive candidate to challenge Obama in 2012 primaries..or maybe he can see he does not have the support and pull an LBJ and not run thus allowing the field to open up for a real Democrat like a Grayson,or Howard Dean etc

There are times the big picture looks like this to me: Corporations that control the US give us the facade of a popularly-elected, grass-roots type President elect. Then make him fail so we all "see" that a Democrat or "people's president" won't do anything for us.

I wish he'd fight. I'm sure he won't. And we are all sunk.

Obama Blasts Boehner's Tax Cuts for Rich

"Make no mistake: He and his party believe we should ... give a permanent tax cut to the wealthiest 2% of Americans," President Obama said of House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) in a speech Wednesday. "With all the other budgetary pressures we have, with all the Republicans' talk about wanting to shrink the deficit, they would have us borrow $700 billion over the next 10 years to give a tax cut of about $100,000 each to folks who are already millionaires."

Here are the ugly numbers. Oh, and they come straight from the government.

www.usdebtclock.org

Then there's an article from cnnmoney stating 47% of households pay NO Federal Income Tax.
I know we need a progressive tax system, but my god, half the country is skating, not 10 or 20 percent.
What happened to "everyone must have skin in the game"?

http://money.cnn.com/2009/09/30/pf/taxes/who_pays_taxes/index.htm

The rich are moving assets and jobs offshore left and right. Just look at outsourcing. They aren't stupid.
They can see the sinking ship that we are. Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, Fannie and Freddie are all deep in the red.

You can get rid of the all waste and fraud, the pentagon, and it wouldn't even make a dent.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D6Q14HOBThM

Our corporate tax rates are already the second highest in the developed world, according to OECD.

http://www.taxfoundation.org/taxdata/show/23473.html

How much more do you expect to take from one group and give to another before the whole thing just tips over?
Do you want the next 2 or 3 generations to pay a tax rate of 80% + of what they earn so we can keep funding
this, that and the other thing? Enough already. It's not about what you want. It's about what we can afford.

88. 47% of households pay NO Federal Income Tax?
So are you saying that 47% of households have no one who is employed in them. Because that is the ONLY WAY that this could be true.

Everyone who works pays Federal taxes. Everyone. It's called FICA. The F stands for federal.

90. I said Federal Income Taxes. Federal Insurance Contributions Act is not a tax.
Unless you want to argue LBJ throwing everything into the "unified budget" and thereby putting IOU's in the trust fund makes it a tax.
In which case, you aren't going to see all of it anyway, because the thing is going broke.

116. How?
I pay over $1000 in Federal Tax every year, and though I get most of it back in my refund (usually around $800-$900), I don't break even or experience a net gain. And I only make around $10,000/year if I'm lucky (Only $7,000 this year :-( ). How does half of America not pay taxes?

And while our corporate tax rates may be high, the corporations don't actually pay the tax. Many get a refund. Just ask General Electric.

121. Social security is in the red as is medicare, medicaid, fannie and freddie.
Because corporate taxes are high, it makes us less competitive in the world economy. That's a bad thing. That's why businesses move overseas. They seek the lowest tax profile. You can keep hoping to penalize businesses, but they just leave altogether. Why do you think California's tax base has shrunk?

124. Corporations DON'T PAY THE TAX
Their taxes aren't high because they don't pay it. They used to have to reinvest in infrastructure, now they get breaks. And more breaks. And more breaks. Then they ship the money out elsewhere. The companies still have their headquarters HERE, but their operations are now overseas. Corporations reaped record (RECORD) profits the past year.

Social security "in the red" is yet another myth perpetuated by your leaders Rush, Hannity, Beck, and O'Reilly. It is completely solvent at this time. It won't be if we don't all start working. The tax base shrinks when people have no jobs and income.

112. Where was all the debt hysteria when Raygun and the bushes were running up the debt?
Seems these debt hysterics only come out when there is a Democratic president. It seems this issue is used only for one purpose - to hamstring a Democratic president.

"47% of households pay NO Federal Income Tax." Really? Are you sure you got your numbers right? My son when he worked as a waiter paid federal taxes. Why do you not consider Social Security and Medicare taxes a federal tax? You don't pay it when you buy something. You don't pay it when you die. You don't pay it on real estate. You pay it on every last dime you make by working for a living. Except if you earn over $110,000 a year then you don't have to pay it on the billions you make. Now, exactly who is taking from whom????

The rich have always moved assets out of the country. It's a way of avoiding paying taxes on it. Swiss bank accounts were created for a purpose you know.

There are 3 simple reasons for our debt 1. Paying for 2 or 3 useless wars. 2. The bush tax cuts - the hundreds of billions the uber rich sock away in those Swiss bank accounts. We pay for it by borrowing from the Chinese so that the uber rich can stuff more away in their off shore bank accounts. 3. This recession or depression. With fewer people working, there are fewer people paying taxes.

NOBODY pays the corporate tax rate. Take a look at the IRS figures. Most corporations pay $0.00 in federal taxes and get refunds. There are so many loop holes no corporation with a half decent CFO pays any taxes.

Right it is not about what the masses want it is about what the uber rich want and they want that $70 billion a year tax give away so they can stuff it in an off shore account. But working stiffs, who can't hide their money, they pay and pay and pay. Taxes are for the little people and that is how this country runs. It's about time the uber rich paid their fair share.

122. Keep that punishment mentality going.
It's working out real well, for many other countries, but not for us.

You were cited the OECD figures. If you want me to look at IRS figures, link them and then link the tax figures of other countries.

Swiss bank accounts are passe'. Give us a break on the offshore accounts. That's old news and the IRS got access to them anyway through international agreements. So WHERE is the money in these supposed accounts of U.S. citizens overseas? You're peddling a myth.

The uber rich are shrinking in the U.S. and growing overseas.

We borrow from the chinese because entitlement costs are exploding. That's what happens with ponzi schemes like medicare and social security, which are mathematically unstable. NO ponzi scheme ever survives long term - the math is against it.

She was probably the most productive speaker ever. And the bills passed with the progressive language needed only to be torn apart or ignored in the senate.
Do you want her to do Harry Reid's job also? Frankly I do.And it would help if Obama would back her up.
Except for impeachment, she did what was needed and more. And she had to buck them fucking blue dogs to get it done.

I'm not her biggest fan, but you are absolutely right. She kept the dems in the house in line and she had 255 cats to herd vs 56 for Harry. They passed major pieces of legislation and she didn't bow down to the minority leader Boehner. All the while she was vilified by the right and the media.

I can't listen to her without wincing a bit, but I respect her historic achievement as Speaker.

I have run out of patience with Obama. I want someone who cares about the working class.

We don't have to negotiate with the repukes. Let the tax cuts expire and we would be better off then if we extend because the economy would be more sound with the cuts gone. Hell if you out of work you don't have income to tax!

21. The REAL reason why the R's want a tax cut for the top 2% is because...
THEY are at the top 2 percent!, and when they preach about America "making sacrifices" in the name of 'fiscal responsibility', they of course would NEVER include themselves in that. THAT sacrifice is only reserved for the middle class and working poor. If we mortals are lucky enough maybe, JUST maybe, they will allow a very small percentage to 'trickle down' to the masses, even though it usually just trickles up anyway. There's a war going on outside....Poor Americans suffer without unemployment benefits and die, even though the middle class and poor weren't the ones who created this economic anarchy, THOSE people never even knew of the recession THEY'VE created, it's hard to tell people are suffering when you are having sex with exotic supermodels on your yacht before being chauffered back to your gated community to kiss your spouse goodnight.

And every day we draw that much closer to our Republican friends understanding that they can trust Democrats again, that our hyperpartisanship is behind us, that we have jettisoned the Professional Left, and that we are ready to good partners in creating a better future. Despite Nancy Pelosi and her "Gays have equal rights" San Francisco values.

52. House tax bill extends middle-class rates only
(Reuters) - Democrats in the House of Representatives were set to release legislation on Wednesday extending lower tax rates for incomes up to $200,000 only, letting Bush-era rates for the wealthiest Americans rise.

The bill, obtained by Reuters, extends certain lower tax rates that will expire at the end of the year, enacted under former President George W. Bush.

The House is expected to vote on the proposal on Thursday but such a measure would face a tough road in the Senate.
