Liberal groups blast Obama for considering tax compromise
Source: WP

The Progressive Change Campaign Committee, a liberal group that has repeatedly attacked President Obama on the left, is airing an ad demanding that he not agree to any compromise with the GOP that would extend tax cuts for household incomes above $250,000 a year.

The spot is called "Obama Promised," and the group says it will air on CNN and MSNBC and on Jon Stewart's "The Daily Show" on Comedy Central over the next few days. It shows Obama in 2007 declaring that "we will also allow the temporary Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans to expire."

Text at the end says, "Keep Your Promise. Fight, Don't Cave, On Tax Cuts."

"President Obama made a clear promise during the 2008 election, and our ad reminds him that he has a choice," said Stephanie Taylor, the group's co-founder. "He can keep his promise and make sure that the wealthiest Americans pay their fair share of taxes. Or he can break his promise, add billions to our national debt, and leave his past supporters demoralized by caving to Republicans even when they are clearly wrong. The choice is his."

Meanwhile, Moveon.Org has its own new ad, titled "Obama Back," which in cludes a video montage from Americans all over the country urging the president not to compromise.

"MoveOn members worked countless hours to help elect President Obama so we would have a leader who would go to the mat for regular Americans," said Justin Ruben, Executive Director of MoveOn.org. "...We need the Obama of 2008 back to lead the fight and make the wealthiest Americans pay their fair share."

2. President Obama -- Just say NO!
Edited on Thu Dec-02-10 12:46 PM by eringer
Mr. President,
You have the upper hand in this fight. You are the president. You are holding all the aces. You can lose only by folding. Don't do it. The American people who voted for you are right behind you on this one. Announce that there will be no compromise and TELL THE IRS that the Bush tax cuts will expire and for them to get the forms and booklets ready for 2011. The GOP will flinch. Its them who should be looking for a compromise. Let them come begging, hat in hand, and then kick their a$$es out of your office.
Two years is a long time for the rich to pay their fair share. In the interim, the rich will chastise the GOP. The rich will run to the president for help. Remember, its not just the tax rates, its estate taxes. The rich do not want to kill grandma and/or grandpa on New Years Eve.

4. Obama will give in, just watch.
He's the president who can't say "no" to Republicans, no matter how much the American people agree with his position.

7. It's not just the "liberals" who oppose these...
Edited on Thu Dec-02-10 01:11 PM by CoffeeCat
...outrageous tax breaks for those making $250,000+, including millionaires and billionaires.

It's also Independents, and some Republicans. Warren Buffet has come out against extending this
little gift to the rich.

These are Bush's tax cuts. They were supposed to sunset in 2011. They were not supposed to
be a permanent deal. But the yacht owners are screaming in the streets that President Obama
is going to raise their taxes. No, your tax rate is simply being returned to what it was
before Bush gave you a nice big monetary gift.

These bastards who want these tax breaks, are the same jokers who get the vapors about the
deficit. "Ohhhhhh Lordy, Lordy!!! We just have to get that deficit down---and we'll do that
after we get to add to our piles of money."

The media is trying to say that the fringe, loony left is only opposed to these tax cuts. So,
when Obama gives these greedmongers their way--he will be a serious, tough politician who doesn't
cave to his whiny base.

Oh please.

18. This is how you know that the Corporate Media walks, talks and shills for the Republican Party...
...it has continuously parrotted Republican talking points, Republican memes, and Republican falsehoods.

You are 100% correct and it's hard to convince people, just like the public option.

The public option was supported by MOST people--liberals, Independents, and yes, many Republicans and conservatives. But most in the Corporate Media, including Ed, Rachel and Keith, made it appear that it was some "looney left" idea. NO!! Single payer is supported from "the Left." The public option was the COMPROMISE!!

I've been a staunch Obama supporter and I've defended him up to his point even though I've been incredibly angry and disappointed with him.

But if he caves on this, I swear, I will never support him, ever. I will not vote for him. I will not support his candidacy. And it may be a moot point, anyway, because I believe that he will not run for reelection.

This is the one issue that will be my line in the sand for this administration. I've had it!!

19. I've had it too...
...and I was a precinct captain. In fact, he personally asked me to
be a precinct captain over the telephone.

I cannot support what is happening. My guess is that the Presidency in
America no longer holds any real power. The neocons and the corporatists
control it all--and they plant a friendly in the Presidency to uphold
their corruption. I seriously do not think Obama is one of them.

However, I think they've told him how it's going to go down.

Like you, I don't think he'll run. I truly think that he's a decent person. Not
a narcissist or a sociopath like most of our recent Presidents. Why do you
think that he won't run? I'm curious.

I feel your pain tho. I have really had it too. The healthcare bill was
it for me. What a corporate giveaway and a shitty deal for "We The People."

10. POTUS will cave.
The dems didn't exploit this gift of a situation (ie bush tax cuts expiring) before the crucial mid-term elections, what makes us think they will act now? Weak sauce!

11. Stand firm, or Stand Down in 2012!!
Use your podium, your veto pen and everything else you have to see that these tax cuts for the rich do not go through. I would much rather have ALL tax cuts expire than have the rich get theirs. They add to the deficit, do not create jobs and their tax rate ought to actually go up to at least Clinton's rate to help balance the books and pay down the debt they created. The tax breaks for the lower 98% are generally pretty miserly, in the hundreds, compared to the thousands for the rich. Make the repukes pay for this.

If you do not have the backbone to do what the American people want, what you campaigned on, then do a Lyndon Johnson and stand down. Announce you will not run for re-election in 2012 so Dems will have a clear field to find someone who will work for the people instead of the corps.

In fact, I suggest we start discussing who would be a viable candidate in 2012, like Feingold, now. Because I have absolutely no confidence in Obama anymore and will not be supporting him the next time around. I think many here feel the same.

17. When he screws us again this time, can this finally be the last straw?
He has repeatedly exposed himself as a republican. Yes, I find it extremely disappointing too, but at a certain point we need to to stop hoping that Obama will change, acknowledge who he really is, and start to find a democratic candidate to run in 2012.

24. Agreed. If this goes down I'm done with Obama. Maybe Howard Dean
will change his mind about running in 2012 if the tax cuts get extended for the wealthy.
