WikiLeaks site down, Assange close to arrest (WikiLeaks: Assange facing assassination threats)

Updated 30 minutes ago

The WikiLeaks website has been shut down worldwide, as British media reports Scotland Yard could arrest the site's founder Julian Assange as early as tomorrow.

WikiLeaks says servers in the United States have killed the site's domain name following "mass attacks".

The domain hosting withdrawal means the website is down worldwide. Earlier this week Amazon booted WikiLeaks from its servers.

Mr Assange's Stockholm-based lawyer Bjoern Hurtig says he will fight his client's extradition to Sweden in the event of his arrest. "Together with my British colleague Mark Stephens and international experts, we will fight the extradition warrants," he said.

A WikiLeaks spokesman says Mr Assange has to remain out of the public eye because he is facing assassination threats following the whistleblowing website's publication of the secret cables.

11. Australian Broadcasting Corporation isn't owned by Murdoch. It's owned by the Australian government
Not sure if that makes it worse or better, though...

Funding
As opposed to many of its international counterparts such as the BBC,<52> the ABC is funded entirely by the Australian government, in addition to some revenue received from its retail outlets. In the 2006–07 federal budget, the ABC received A$823 million of government funding,<53> increased to $840 million in 2008–09.<3>

3. I wonder how much this push to shut him down has to do with the
cables, and how much it has to do with the banking info he has?

I have been reading the cables and summaries at The Guardian. A lot of stuff we already knew, like the government is being run by double digit mouth breathers, etc.

7. Add this to it. Sadly.
http://www.readwriteweb.com/cloud/2010/12/tableau-software-drops-wikileaks.php

Facing indirect pressure from the U.S. Government, Tableau Software has dropped Wikileaks' data from its site for people to use for data visualization. According to an announcement posted on Tableau's blog, the company decided to drop Wikileaks' content after reading Sen. Joe Lieberman's public request that companies hosting Wikileaks' data remove it. According to the announcement: "Our terms of service require that people using Tableau Public do not upload, post, email, transmit or otherwise make available any content that they do not have the right to make available." It does not appear that Tableau was contacted by the senator directly, nor that it received a cease-and-desist order or any other official request to remove the visualizations.

Another gutless company fails in the face of the truth.

That they're trying to get every site that has any of the cables on it scrubbing them off? Lieberman can make a "request", but that doesn't mean they have to comply, does it?

And ratchets up the pressure on Wikileaks to keep things running normally.

15. Can someone please post the checksum for the insurance file?
The checksum as reported by the wikileaks site.

We need that for verification; I wouldn't put it beyond the realm of possibility for Authorities to upload a honeypot that looks like the insurance file, but is, in fact, full of child pr0n (for example), the better to arrest those who would distribute its contents.

We need a verifiable checksum for the file. Bad Things could happen otherwise.

I know this post sounds paranoid, but that sort of thing is well-known to be SOP for those who would bring down Wikileaks.

The more the truth is repressed, the more the truth wil came out, and blow the mind out of everyone...

And, wel in Sweden mr Assage at least would be protected for them, who want him killed.. Sweden are still a land of laws, and wil protect the right of Aassage, the same way they wil protect the right of the woman/women who accuse mr Assage of rape or sexual encounter they do not like. In Sweden, as in most european country, you are still not gulity, before the verdict is been made final, and as long as you keep yourself to the truth, the truth wil somewhat came to light anyway..

But I would not put it past many organisations, like CIA, or the russian counterparts to try to kill mr Aassage, they have a long history of killing they who do not play it by the rules, and Wikileak and mr Assage have REALLY not been playing it by the books, with all the new informations who have coming from many sources now.. Many is afraid, really afraid of what mr Assage might have down in his computer or other places.. So they want to close it down as fast as they can.. But you can not close down the information this days.. With internet truth wil allways came out, even if it wil be more difficult as preassure to close it down is there.. For every site US government, or its proxy elsewhere wil try to shut down, at least 100 wil go up, and the info wil be there to be shared for everyone.. We just need to know where to look to get the info we need to have..

Mr Assage is a really pain in the ass for most of the worlds government, and I wil bet he know a few things about the other players too, that he wil give up when the time is right.. And for some reason I doubt that this type of info, wil be closed down if mr Assage is killed off.. Then I belive ALL the info Wikileak have to its disposel wil be known for everyone with a internet conection... Then it REALLY wil be hell to pay.. For everyone.

(WIREUPDATE) — Early Friday morning WikiLeaks announced they are changing their domain name from WikiLeaks.org to WikiLeaks.ch after a DNS service provider terminated their services at the original domain.

"WikiLeaks moves to Switzerland" read the message on Twitter referring to the top-level domain name belonging to the country Switzerland.

28. If they murder Assange, the info war is so on
Edited on Fri Dec-03-10 08:05 AM by Bragi
Seriously, if they kill Assange, then I think no government files anywhere will be safe from disclosure from here on in.

The reason: the truth is, all it takes is one conscientious and enraged official in a government to leak sensitive files, and doing so anonymously is far from impossible.

The remarkable thing for me isn't that so much information leaks, it is that so few public officials ever even consider leaking sensitive information to which they have access.

If governments start engaging in the extra-judicial state murder of whistleblowers, however, then really, the whole game has changed.

It really would be a global declaration of war against anyone who supports the free flow of information, and another nail in the coffin of democracy.

29. They've taken down the Guardians live blog site.

Some of the latest news related to the WikiLeaks release of sensitive U.S. diplomatic cables that continues to generate headlines around the world:

— Britain's The Independent says WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange is "expected to be arrested in the coming days after Swedish prosecutors filed a new warrant with British authorities." As we reported yesterday, Assange is thought to be in the U.K. and the Swedish warrant isn't about the leaks. It's about an alleged rape. Assange says he's innocent.

— But Assange may be "live" on The Guardian's website starting around 8 a.m. ET. He's supposed to be in the comments thread at that link. That is, says the Guardian, "if he can get access to the Internet. ... a big if at the moment." (Update at 8:05 a.m. ET: This probably shouldn't surprise anyone, but the Guardian's webpage where Assange is supposed to join the conversation isn't loading for us at this moment. Perhaps it can't handle the traffic?)

— And about Assange's access to the Internet ... the website's domain name system provider withdrew service from WikiLeaks.org yesterday because of hacker attacks that had "threatened the rest of its network," the Associated Press writes. WikiLeaks moved to a Swiss provider, changing its url to wikileaks.ch

Report: Assange To Be Arrested Soon On Sexual Assault Allegations
moments ago

From the British Independent:

Julian Assange, the WikiLeaks founder, is expected to be arrested in the coming days after Swedish prosecutors filed a new warrant with British authorities.

The Independent revealed yesterday that a procedural error with the European Arrest Warrant had delayed the arrest of the 39-year-old Australian, who is wanted in Sweden over sexual allegations but has been in England since October.

Police in Gothenburg claim they have now submitted a fresh warrant to the Serious Organised Crime Agency. Soca is expected to instruct Scotland Yard to arrest Mr Assange and have him appear before an extradition hearing - although as of last night the Metropolitan Police had yet to receive the warrant.

Seems to me that they would just pick him up if they knew where he was, rather than telegraphing when they "might" do it...unless my prescription drug company is running the Yard now. If Health Springs were running Scotland Yard this Marx Brother style of "hunting criminals" would make a lot of sense.

I wonder what "business" Senator Feinstein is referring to. I haven't noticed much change around me. Everyone is still conducting their daily business as usual in my area.

What it does, is hinder the government's ability to act in secrecy, and with hypocrisy and duplicity, but are these "qualities" really what we want to see in our government's conduct?

39. WikiLeaks' Assange to fight any extradition: lawyer
By Adam Cox and Niklas Pollard

STOCKHOLM | Fri Dec 3, 2010 11:56am EST

STOCKHOLM (Reuters) - WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange will fight any bid to extradite him to Sweden over sexual misconduct allegations, and suspects foreign powers are influencing the authorities, his Swedish lawyer said on Friday.

The Swedish prosecutor's office said information needed for a European arrest warrant in the case had been supplied to Britain, where media reports say Assange is staying.

In a telephone interview, his lawyer Bjorn Hurtig declined to say where Assange was right now, or when he had last spoken to him, though he said they were in "constant contact."

But he said any attempt to extradite him from another country, for example from Britain, would be resisted in court:

Britain will only extradite for acts that are a crime in Britain.
