THE EMPLOYMENT SITUATION -- NOVEMBER 2010

The unemployment rate edged up to 9.8 percent in November, and nonfarm payroll
employment was little changed (+39,000), the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics
reported today. Temporary help services and health care continued to add jobs
over the month, while employment fell in retail trade. Employment in most major
industries changed little in November.

Household Survey Data

The number of unemployed persons was 15.1 million in November. The unemployment
rate edged up to 9.8 percent; it was 9.6 percent in each of the prior 3 months.
(See table A-1.)

Among the major worker groups, the unemployment rates for adult men (10.0 per-
cent), adult women (8.4 percent), whites (8.9 percent), and Hispanics (13.2 per-
cent) edged up in November. The jobless rate for blacks (16.0 percent) showed
little change over the month, while the rate for teenagers declined to 24.6 per-
cent. The jobless rate for Asians was 7.6 percent, not seasonally adjusted. (See
tables A-1, A-2, and A-3.)

Among the unemployed, the number of job losers and persons who completed tempor-
ary jobs rose by 390,000 to 9.5 million in November. The number of long-term un-
employed (those jobless for 27 weeks and over) was little changed at 6.3 million
and accounted for 41.9 percent of the unemployed. (See tables A-11 and A-12.)

13. Unemployment Rate Climbs to 9.8%
Source: AP

WASHINGTON, Dec. 3, 2010
Unemployment Rate Climbs to 9.8 Percent

Weaker Than Expected Hiring Drives Jobless Rate to Highest Level in Seven Months as Employers Add 39,000 Jobs
(AP)

<snip>

Employers added only 39,000 jobs last month, a sharp decline from the 172,000 created in October, the Labor Department reported Friday. The weakness was widespread. Retailers, factories, construction companies, financial firms and the government all cut jobs last month.

<snip>

With hiring so weak, the unemployment rate rose from 9.6 percent to 9.8 percent. The jobless rate has now topped 9 percent for 19 straight months, the longest stretch on record.

All told there were 15.1 million people unemployed in November.

<snip>

Another grim figure: There was a record 1.3 million "discouraged" workers in November. Those are persons not currently looking for work because they believe no jobs are available to them.

We heard within the last couple of days how improved employment was, even seasonally adjusted. Best in 3 years. Yet, this is the highest unemployment number since April 2010. Shows how you spin a story is everything.

And Republicans don't want to extend unemployment benefits and good ole sell out corporate media are accusing Dems of "showboating."

Happy holidays, y'all.

President Obama will be on TV this morning to discuss this.
