Rains have affected 71,849 people, says Venezuelan Minister of Interior

Tareck El Aissami, the Minister of the Interior and Justice, said that 71,849 people have been affected by heavy rains, which represent 15,570 households.

The official added that the number of people affected by rains has increased as state security forces are reaching towns that were cut off, reported state-run news agency Agencia Venezolana de Noticias (AVN).

With regard to collection centers, he said that they have received 1,947 tons of food so far, 168,640 liters of drinking water and 692 mattresses.

2. Venezuela hit by deadly mudslides

Flooding and landslides triggered by torrential rains have killed at least 21 people in Venezuela over the last week.

Thousands fled their homes on Tuesday as swollen rivers and continuing rain threatened to cause more damage.

"The rains will carry on for the next three days at least," Elias Jaua, the vice-president, told state television.

Most of those killed died in landslides, while others were swept away by a river that burst it's banks.
