The American military death toll in Iraq (news - web sites) rose to at least 610 Sunday, following the announcement of several deaths over the weekend. snip

Since May 1, when President Bush (news - web sites) declared that major combat operations in Iraq had ended, 458 U.S. soldiers have died — 297 as a result of hostile action and 161 of non-hostile causes, according to the Department of Defense as of Friday.

Since the start of military operations, 2,988 U.S. service members have been injured as a result of hostile action, according to the Defense Department's figures as of Friday.

it's still infuriating.

My poster board ("Iraq Wall") is now on three large panels, with names stretching to the middle of the 2nd column (4 columns in all) of the 3rd board. I have more than 610 right now .... but then I count some they don't.

The board attracts a lot of attention when we table at the Univ of WY Union on Wednesdays. It's helped us build alliances we wouldn't have made otherwise & facilitates many stimulating discussions. I've met the cousin of one dead, friends of several. One person comes by weekly to check for an old high school friend who's there. In a small (tiny) way, it makes me feel good to think they still have some "life" in those moments when people are reading their names. But it's crushing on days like this when I had to add 8 earlier and I now know I have another long day of updates coming in a few days.
