Hillary Clinton says she in her last public job
Source: Reuters

<snip>

"Hillary Clinton said on Friday that her current job as U.S. secretary of state was probably her last public position and that she would in future return to her roots as an advocate for women.

Clinton, who has repeatedly laughed off suggestions she might still want to take command of the White House, told an audience of Bahrain students that she was not contemplating a repeat run for president after losing to Barack Obama in 2008.

"No, I'm not," Clinton said. "I think I'll serve as secretary of state as my last public position, and then probably go back to advocacy work, particularly on behalf of women and children."

It was the first time Clinton has spoken so directly about leaving public service, where she has been a dominant figure in Democratic circles for two decades."

2. It was not the first time she has spoken so directly about it.
I saw her in interviews over a year ago where she was talking about how she would only do 4 years max as SOS and then return to private life.

14. That's very unlikely
For some reason, when you're preparing a run but haven't announced yet, you're apparently supposed to lie and say you aren't running. I don't know why, but that's how it's done. But of course, you would also say you aren't running if that is actually the case. It can get confusing.

The chances of a Hillary run in 2012 are virtually nil. The chances of ANYBODY mounting a serious primary challenge to Obama are not much higher.

and also that she may not serve another term as SOS.

17. As I understand it, it's primarily the age issue.
She's not going to piss off the party brass by running against Obama in 2012, which means that she really can't run again until 2016 when she'll be 69 years old. If she served a single term as President, she wouldn't be done until she's 73. Two terms, 77.

For contrast, Obama will leave office at 55, George Bush Jr. left office at 62, Bill left office at 56, and Bush Sr. left office at 69. They left office at a younger age than she would be entering it at. All of them left office young enough to still accomplish any other goals they had set for their lives, and all but Bush Jr. are active in various advocacy organizations today.

You have to go back to "Old Man Reagan" to find someone else who stayed in office that long (he left office at 77), and his life rather infamously entered its alzheimers cursed twilight as he was leaving. His role as president ended up being the last thing he ever did with his life.

My guess is that Hillary Clinton doesn't want to go out like Reagan. She wants to leave political office while she's still young enough to do other things with her life. She's said as much several times now.

This country can't elect a real progressive. Granted JFK grew into being a progressive, Paul Wellstone was born one. Lessons should be learned...you can't go but just so far in working for the people.I see the future collapse of the economy as the perfect time for making the necessary changes...so WE can elect a progressive. See more progressives on TV and then see them allowed to finish a sentence.

13. Repeal of Glass Steagall was a huge factor in the economic collapse
And he demanded it be on his desk ASAP.

Didn't do a lot about tightening security, either, despite terrorist attacks.

Welfare "reform."

DLC. Triangulating. Dick Morris. Rahm Emanuel. Et al., ad infinitum

DADT, DOMA (after running on gay rights).

Presidential perjury, blow jobs and Paula Jones were fun additions to 8th grade history books, though.

32. That comment would seem to suggest one of two things
Either that she would be unelectable or that she wouldn't be confirmed to a different post (or that it would hurt Obama politically to try).

The polls would seem to contradict that position. Her numbers are solid and, regardless of whether she ultimately won, it would be silly to classify her as "unelectable."

And it's hard to imagine that the Senate would refuse to confirm her as Secretary of Defense, or that there would be a public backlash that caused Obama's poll numbers to drop.

36. So you would rather that Romney, Huckabee, Palin or Pence get into the White House?
Do you consider the health care reform act to be inconsequential? What about financial reform? Or how about his appointments of Sotomayor and Kagan? Or his future replacements for Ginsburg, Breyer and Kennedy? Or the fact the War in Iraq is finally ending?

I've never been Obama's biggest fan, but I think he's doing his best. And I shudder to imagine what will happen to this country if we let the GOP back into the White House.

> Do you consider the health care reform act to be inconsequential?

Yes

> What about financial reform?

Also inconsequential (= non-existent)

> Or how about his appointments of Sotomayor and Kagan?

OK, give you that one.

> Or his future replacements for Ginsburg, Breyer and Kennedy?

Bzzt! Possible/potential/maybe <> "is"

> Or the fact the War in Iraq is finally ending?

Good joke. I'm sure the Iraqis being killed every day by US troops
and mercenaries really appreciate the relabelling of "combat actions".

primary.

I'm really over this "the other side is worse" crap. I, for one, don't see a difference. Bush was an anomaly. Obama implemented Romney's health care plan.

Have a great weekend! :hi:

42. I totally saw this coming...
I mentioned in another thread, when someone mentioned her possibly running again, that she didn't want it. I knew she didn't. She will, however, do well on the speaking circuit, and will probably be able to raise a ton of money for charity, and line the DNC coffers with quite a bit of cash in the coming years.
