French ministers and bankers have warned that an appeal by Eric Cantona, the former Manchester United star, for citizens to withdraw all their money from banks could propel France into economic chaos.

The footballer-turned actor star raised eyebrows and in some cases a laugh when he first made the suggestion in October, just as millions took to the streets against a pension bill in protests that failed to stop the reform.

But with three days to go before the great bank pullout and with hundreds of thousands having viewed the online call of "King Eric" - his football nickname - the "joke" is wearing thin for France's government and top banks.

where it hurts. I'd consider it. I've lived without a bank account before and I could do it again.

It would probably work just as well to pull out of a major bank and start using local banks and credit unions for your day to day transactions.

The thing about these kinds of actions is that they DO have to be organized. It's good to see someone with some sports popularity is spearheading this. That would get the average Joe and Jane involved.
