Obama to Speak on Tax Cuts, Economy in NC
Source: ABC News

President Barack Obama is traveling to North Carolina to speak at a community college, where he'll call for a deal on extending tax cuts and jobless benefits.

The president's trip to Winston-Salem Monday comes as the White House and lawmakers are working on a compromise to extend temporarily Bush-era tax cuts for all income brackets and expiring jobless benefits.

A White House official says Obama will renew his opposition Monday to any upper-income tax-cut extension unless unemployment benefits also are extended. The official spoke on condition of anonymity ahead of Obama's remarks.

Obama also will call for investments in education and innovation to boost America's competitiveness with other countries.

1. We need to call it the millionaire's tax cut, not the upper income tax cut extension

15. & the tradeoff will be a very de minimis extension of unemp. bennies.
The tax cut extension for millionaires will be for two years, but look for a lousy three months extension, instead of a year for the unemployed. And as to the "temporariness" of the extension for the rich, we all KNOW it will be made permanent by the GOP controlled House and Senate. They won't even need the despicable Blue Dogs' votes.

17. Barack 'Big Balls' Obama: 'Repubs, The Rich get $700 billion if the unemployed get $18 billion!'
then, of course, part of the $700 billion is funnelled back to repubs to purchase congress (i.e. Reagan 80's tax cuts)

2. Let the Tax Cuts Expire.
"A White House official says Obama will renew his opposition Monday to any upper-income tax-cut extension unless unemployment benefits also are extended."
THIS IS BS. THE DEMOCRATS IN THE HOUSE WILL NEVER BUY IT. OBAMA, YOU MUST LET THE BUSH TAX CUTS EXPIRE.

3. What about the unemployed?
Will they be allowed to expire too? Because with no income that's where they're headed.

7. the unemployment benefits could be extended at any time.
The tax cut for all but the upper 2% could be passed at any time. The 60 votes needed in the Senate thing is a lie. Fact is only 51 votes are needed but our 'leaders' lack the balls to push the issue.

maybe you haven't been paying attention

but that 'all it takes is 51 votes' meme, isn't exactly accurate.

middle class tax cuts could have been passed via reonciliation.

25. First Obama and Bernanke have to realize we have a crisis.
They don't. The Ben Bernank said on 60 minutes last night that unemployment could run high for another 5 or 6 years. We need a fucking jobs program. We don't need band aids. The market is not going to magically get us out of this.

We need action and leadership. We have neither.

He should be going down there to rip the Republicans for economic policies that don't add up. Instead, we have this false choice between Bush tax cuts and unemployment insurance.

He is completely fucking this one up.

Just reported that Obama will extend tax cuts to the wealthy. And, that even as he was speaking against tax cuts for millionaires in public, he was working behind the scenes to work with republicans to extend those very same cuts. Erskine Bowles was quoted as saying that this is proof that Republicans and Democrats can work together!

the people making over $250,000. After 6 months if the unemployment is under 8.5% we give them another 6 months if not we take it back. Then after the next 6 months if it is under 7% we give them another 6 months if not we take it back. Then after another 6 months if it is under 5.5% we give them another 6 months and if not take it back. Then after that 6 months if it goes under 4% we just eliminate all taxes for the rich and become Republicans.

18. He thinks we are stupid. They use to say that about Bush's view of his own constituents.
When Bush was in N.C. rallying people for the privatization of SS, Democrats held up a large sign as the Republicans filed in. The sign said: HE THINKS YOU'RE STUPID!!!

Maybe it's time to get those signs out again and display them at Obama rallies. :eyes:

21. Why not address the nation..........
lay it all out on the table. Talk about the unemployed extension, and talk about extending the tax cuts to everyone but he rich and how much it will help the deficit and the country.

But that of course would take some balls and I know that is not possible, we must reach across the aisle!

34. Agreed.
Dems could have, and should have, brought the middle class, only, tax cuts via RECONCILIATION. The fact that they won't, didn't, means that the votes on Saturday were nothing more than a "political smoke screen" to cover their "hasty retreat."

29. Why not cancel the tex cut and use the money for unemployment benefits?
Serious question: Is the revenue loss associated with continuing the partial tax holiday for the rich more than the cost of extending the unemployment benefits?

If so, why doesn't Obama tell the GOP to shove it, announce the end of the tax cut for the rich, and announce that the money will be used to pay for/ or at least contribute to paying the cost of, the extension of benefits to the unemployed?

30. More Obama ClapTrap
This is just more of Obama's claptrap double-speak once again as he again caves to the GOP. I hope nobody shows up to this fake rally he is holding.

Obama is caving again. And if Obama is not caving, then he might as well change his affiliation to the Republican Party because it is now clear there is only ONE POLITICAL PARTY NOW OPERATING HERE IN THE USA.

So, again, going by the premise that Obama is not caving or he is not engaged in double-speak along with other Democrats, then one can only deduce that the Democratic Party doesn't give a rat's ass about anyone, but, their bankerster pals on Wall Street, and never really opposed the Bush tax cuts in the first place.

This is beyond politics at this point in the theatre of the absurd.

It's downright despicable and Mr.Obama ought to be ashemed of himself so much that he does not seek a second term. Other Democrats who vote fot this tax cut for the upper two percent shouldn't expect voter support in their next elections either.

Get used to this one folks: DEMOCRATIC PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA AND THE DEMOCRATS IN CONGRESS SUPPORT BUSH'S TAX CUTS AND WANT TO MAKE THEM PERMANENT.

31. "Obama Is Against a Compromise on Bush Tax Cuts"
"WASHINGTON — President Obama on Wedne+sday will make clear that he opposes any compromise that would extend the Bush-era tax cuts for the wealthy beyond this year, officials said, adding a populist twist to an election-season economic package that is otherwise designed to entice support from big businesses and their Republican allies."

Oh, sorry, that story is from Sept 7, before the mid-terms.

37. My email note to the WH
Sir, I urge you to veto any effort to grant the top wage earners a tax special tax cut beyond what is proposed for the rest of the public. It is grossly irresponsible and only serves to widen the gap between the rich and those who work for a living. The rich are consolidating their power into a permanent, inherited aristocrisy. The worst things Bush did were 1. shift the tax burden to the middle class, 2. invade Iraq, 3. disregard rule of law and 4. disregard objective truth for preconception. Frankly sir, with two wars still going, no prosecutions for war crimes and other offenses by Bush people, inadequate insurance reform that will likely be repealed before 2014 and now extending tax cuts we can't afford, you are not giving the Democratic base much reason to support you in 2012. So, I urge you to veto any tax cut measure that includes the top 2% and to blame Senate Republicans for being unreasonable.
