Elizabeth Edwards dies
Source: WRAL

Chapel Hill, N.C. — Elizabeth Edwards, the political wife whose public battle with breast cancer, coping with marital infidelity and continued advocacy for the downtrodden raised her profile above that of her husband, died Tuesday. She was 61.

Edwards died at her Chapel Hill home, where family and friends had gathered in recent days after doctors informed her that her cancer had spread and recommended that she not undergo further treatment.

Edwards was first diagnosed with cancer in the waning days of the 2004 presidential campaign, when her husband, then-U.S. Sen. John Edwards, was the Democratic nominee for vice president. The couple didn't disclose her illness until after the election.

The cancer went into remission after surgery and months of treatment, but it resurfaced in early 2007, as John Edwards was mounting a second run at the White House. The Edwardses agreed at the time that they wouldn't allow the cancer to derail his candidacy.

289. How terribly sad it all is. I feel for her children losing their
mother. its hard enough when you're older but when you're that young, how tragic. Go in a good way, Elizabeth.

56. it's kind of hard to believe
even though we knew she had cancer and it wasn't going to be cured and even from what we learned yesterday.

because in all of her appearances we saw she looked great. but the same thing was true with DAna Reeve . i remember thinking when she was on tv shortly before she died that she looked great and wouldn't leave anytime soon. but she died so soon after that.

it's one of those things where once you get sick and you can't improve it happens fast.

77. N&O: The self-proclaimed "anti-barbie" helped "change the way political wives were viewed."
...

Still, Elizabeth Edwards helped change the way political wives were viewed. She was the self-proclaimed "anti-Barbie" who was comfortable sitting in on campaign strategy meetings, chatting with Oprah on TV, or even going head-to-head with conservative columnist Ann Coulter.

She brought a similar self-possession to the media attacks that circulated around her in the wake of news about her husband's infidelity.

"I'm 5 feet 2, dark-haired and could hardly be further from the Barbie figure," Edwards once said. "I think of myself as a fairly serious person."

I don't know what to say . I admired Elizabeth very much.
I was and am pretty peeved about her husbands selfishness.
I won't rant on this thread.
My life has been touched by cancer so often and I have lost so many to it and to HIV that I cannot even count anymore.
I grieve for the loss of a great woman and wonderful person, she advocated for us at the bottom.

194. This was her post I saved it- I find it inspiring
Since I cannot start a thread (which I think is a good rule by the way), I have to hijack one -- at least briefly. I do want this thread to continue on, though, because the topic is so important. (Moderators can feel free to move this, of course.)

But I also had something I wanted to say to all of you. You know that I read DU and have for quite some time, long before any of you knew my name. I really appreciate the support you have given me on this latest hurdle and before. It means a lot to me and to John.

Now that I have more time, I will post some, too. But today I want to share something inspiring, part of a letter from Thomas Jefferson. This is from the new Bernstein biography of Jefferson. Jefferson sent the letter in 1798 after the passage of the Sedition Act:

"A little patience, and we shall see the reign of witches pass over, their spells dissolve, and the people, recovering their true sight, restore their government to its true principles. It is true that in the meantime we are suffering deeply in spirit, and incurring the horrors of a war and long oppressions of enormous public debt. If the game runs sometimes against us at home we must have patience till luck turns, and then we shall have an opportunity of winning back the principles we have lost, for this is a game where principles are at stake."

"Tears in Heaven"

Beyond the door,
There's peace I'm sure,
And I know there'll be no more
Tears in heaven.

But there are still tears here on earth for the loss of a wonderfully intelligent, compassionate woman that was an inspiration for me and so many others...

234. Kerry statement on Elizabeth
Edited on Tue Dec-07-10 06:50 PM by karynnj

“This is very sad news, and the fact that it isn’t a surprise makes it no easier to hear. Elizabeth Edwards was an incredibly loving, giving, and devoted mother, and Teresa and our entire family are grateful for the time we shared getting to know her in 2004. We have many wonderful memories of those days traveling the country and seeing firsthand Elizabeth’s great affection for Cate, Jack, and Emma Claire. Today all those moments are rushing back.

“The same day our campaign ended at Faneuil Hall, we saw Elizabeth head off to Mass General to confront this terrible disease. America came to know her in a different and even more personal way, as she fought back with enormous grace and dignity. She became an inspiration to so many. Teresa and I, along with our family, send our prayers and deepest sympathies to Elizabeth’s family and the children she loved so much.”

I did not expect this so quickly, even after yesterday's (?) announcement. I was just listening to some beautiful Christmas music when I read this; my eyes are filled with tears and my heart goes out to her family, especially her children. Elizabeth Edwards was so courageous in her fight against breast cancer, and she fought with dignity.

Thanks to all of you who posted the photographs of Elizabeth here; the one with her two youngest children is so precious.

350. There is nothing more difficult to overcome than the loss of a child -- nothing.
Losing a child is often too much for a marriage. There is just no way to deal with that loss without change. Every time you look at your partner, you are reminded of the pain.

Don't be so quick to blame.

In my experience (and I have a fair amount), unless one or the other partner is mentally ill or addicted to something (usually alcohol or some drug), the blame (if you want to see it that way) should be shared by both sides. Sometimes extramarital sex is an addiction. Sometimes it is simply a way to leave a bad relationship.

299. R.I.P. Elizabeth
I have lurked here for several years. I remember the depression I felt after Kerry/Edwards lost in 2004. I always admired Elizabeth Edwards for not being the usual dumb trophy wife that many politicians seem to be attracted to. She was smart, witty, well versed on the issues and someone that I felt like if I met that I could relate to. She struck me as both ordinary and extraordinary at the same time. Time is all of our enemy and if I can keep her last words in the forefront of my mind perhaps I can make each day count like she did. Godspeed my "she-ro". Go gently into that dark night and find that peace that you so richly deserve.

302. This one's for you, Elizabeth
Robert Herrick's 'To Daffodils'

Fair daffodils, we weep to see
You haste away so soon;
As yet the early-rising sun
Has not attain'd his noon.
Stay, stay
Until the hasting day
Has run
But to the evensong;
And, having pray'd together, we
Will go with you along.

We have short time to stay, as you,
We have as short a spring;
As quick a growth to meet decay,
As you, or anything.
We die
As your hours do, and dry
Away
Like to the summer's rain;
Or as the pearls of morning's dew,
Ne'er to be found again.

304. Statement by the President on the Passing of Elizabeth Edwards
Statement by the President on the Passing of Elizabeth Edwards

Michelle and I were deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Elizabeth Edwards. This afternoon I spoke to Cate Edwards and John Edwards, and offered our family’s condolences. I came to know and admire Elizabeth over the course of the presidential campaign. She was a tenacious advocate for fixing our health care system and fighting poverty, and our country has benefited from the voice she gave to the cause of building a society that lifts up all those left behind.

In her life, Elizabeth Edwards knew tragedy and pain. Many others would have turned inward; many others in the face of such adversity would have given up. But through all that she endured, Elizabeth revealed a kind of fortitude and grace that will long remain a source of inspiration. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends.

346. May she rest in peace.
And be united with her son, Wade. My thoughts go to her other children, her husband, and the rest of her family and friends.

348. First I cried and then I cried again...
You, Elizabeth, were a woman of great love and great class and like me of 1949 vintage. I always wanted to meet you, but I never did.

May you rest in peace and rise in glory.

May God comfort all those who mourn you.

351. Sad, sad day.
I wasn't expecting this so soon. Rest in peace sweet lady, my prayers are with your family, especially your children. Cancer killed my mom too almost 20 yrs ago (breast cancer) and her brother, my uncle just a couple months ago (pancreatic cancer).
I hate cancer.

364. "Where the weak grow strong and the strong grow great"
This quote from the Official Toast of the State of NC, along with the State Motto which translates to "To be, rather than to seem", certainly apply to Elizabeth Edwards. While she was born and raised elsewhere and first came to NC as a student at UNC after her father became commander of the Naval ROTC here, she and her entire family put down deep roots in NC and a strong commitment to The University and its mission of service to all the people of NC, and to those throughout the world.

When we were undergrads, Chancellor Sitterson welcomed new students to The University, telling them how based upon their academic achievements, their intelligence, and other talents they had been selected to receive a precious gift, to come to this special place as students of this University. Their education here would prepare them for their chosen profession, but more importantly, it would prepare them to be good citizens, leaders in their communities and professions, whether in education, government, law, military service, business, science, health care, the arts, or anywhere else and above all as an informed citizen and voter.

This required the free expression of competing ideas, closely examined and tested, standing or falling based on its merits, not on the whims of the powerful, on tradition, on prejudice, on expediency, on popularity.

This gift, this University, is made by those for over 200 years who have lead, supported, taught, and funded it, and by all the people of NC through their taxes. This gift to you as a student carries with it an obligation going forward to make a positive difference in the lives of the people of NC -- especially those too young or too old, too weak or too poor, or others unable to have their voices heard -- ALL of them including those who attack us and The University daily on television, in the press, or in person.

Elizabeth Edwards certainly made a difference. But like with another slightly older student I knew back then, Paul Wellstone, I have been brought to tears knowing how sorely we will miss her.

she is proof that sometimes, hope and will can keep you alive against all odds. Take that away and you slip away.

358. Rest in peace, dear lady
I just hope that the press doesn't drag up her husband's idiocy during this trying time... it needs to be laid to rest and never brought up again. Let the woman rest, for God's sake. Allow her children to grieve the loss of a fine and good mother without the press bringing up that man's fukkery in the process.

360. I think the wrong one was running. I had a lot of gusto for Mr Edwards
I had more for Elizabeth.
Rest In Peace dear lady.

I have lost both grandmothers to cancer and have survived 4 rounds myself. Personally I think it has to do with the pollution the corpses belch, since both of my grandmothers and numerous other members of my family have had strange cancers and all lived in an area where there were coal mining, coal powered paper, tire and chemical plants along the Potomac's North branch pre EPA there was no life in the river and the smell .
We are poisoning our entire world for a few to make vast fortunes while we die from the pollution.
Now I don't know if EEs cancer was genetic or environmental.
Either way she will be missed.
I live near enough to Carreboro and Chapel Hill that I should have gone to her shop to say hello and tell her how much I admired her, but I never 'had the time' as I was usually in CH for Dr apts for my hiv.

Her suffering is over. For that we can be thankful. I hurt deeply for her children, though.

381. I'm glad Skank-Ass John Edwards was at her bedside, so she could go in peace (and forgiveness?)
I hope she was able to forgive him, so she could cross over without bitterness weighing on her soul.

But John is still a skank-ass.

I pray he's a good father to those kids, because Elizabeth's death is going to leave a huge hole in their lives.
