Aretha Franklin Has Cancer
Edited on Wed Dec-08-10 02:44 PM by Are_grits_groceries
Source: myFOXdetroit.com

myFOXdetroit.com Staff - Fox 2 News in Detroit has learned that the "Queen of Soul" has cancer. A relative of Aretha Franklin tells reporter Al Allen that the icon has cancer. Another relative says the family is very concerned.

At this time Franklin's family says she is doing "OK", but they are asking for the continued prayers and thoughts from the community.

Pop Crunch.com published an article today siting a report by The National Enquirer that Franklin has incurable pancreatic cancer. Fox 2 could not confirm the type of cancer that Franklin has. Last week she underwent surgery for a mystery illness.

The surgery was deemed a success, but it came under mysterious circumstances. A few weeks ago Franklin canceled all concerts through May 2011 due to "medical reasons."

1. Oh, NO.
Pancreatic cancer, if that is what she has, is probably the worst one to get. It is so rarely cured.

Keep fighting, Aretha...

You are in my thoughts...

2. I'm saddened to hear this, I just love her. My dad had pancreatic
cancer. It moves fast, he was gone within three weeks.

4. Mine too monmouth.
He got sick one day, turned yellow the next and was admitted to the hospital. Pancreatic cancer diagnosed the third day, he was dead 10 days later. This was in 1973 so there was precious little option.

I was 19 and not even allowed to visit him.

19. Almost identical story. Had a lot of gas and was belching so I asked
if he wanted to go to ER (it was a Sunday) and he said why not, maybe they'll give me something for it. He was already quite yellow, they kept him, opened him up the next day and immediately closed him up. Up to that point as far as we know he was not in much discomfort except for the gas attacks. Sorry for your loss also.

21. Wow
I am so sorry for you, it is so difficult. I have lost both parents, one very quickly to this and one a very long and slow cancer death (tongue/throat). I would be hard pressed to decide if one were easier than the other.

It is so innocuous sometimes, gas attacks. My god. I am so sorry.

25. I get really annoyed at the tv ads for these gastric problems. These
are signs and that over-the-counter crap stuff they're pushing is only masking the problem. Dad used to drink a lot of coffee (both instant and perked) and always blamed the gas on that. This was in the 80s, much time has passed but as their children we need to keep aware of all oddities that pop up now and then. Much is generational and genetic...

29. One thing I learned working in the ER and then in the ICU
is that you do not medicate abdominal pain until there is a diagnosis. That is not to say a person should not use them but if the problem is chronic then it is worth a check up.

that she can ease out quietly and without pain. This can be so incredibly painful.

A cure, of course, would be a grand thing for a grand lady.

that keep on ticking.

I sincerely hope Aretha keeps ticking too. Looks like she is handling this with a lot of class. She is in my prayers.

20. That is crudely worded headline (from the story link, not from the OP);
it should read something like "Aretha Franklin undergoing cancer treatment". Simply stating that "So-and-so Has Cancer" has an immediate fatalistic tone- which is unfortunate for Aretha and also for anyone reading it who is undergoing cancer treatment. (IMHO)

41. Oh no, the worst kind of cancer.
I hope that she doesn't have a hard time of it. I know that there are better drugs now and a better quality of end of life care for cancer patients, so I hope that if she must go, she goes easy.

Oh, Aretha. She was a huge part of my soundtrack when I was a teenager. I hear "Chain of Fools" and I'm a girl again! :(

The undisputed QUEEN of Soul!

42. My thoughts and best wishes to Miss Franklin...
I lost a teacher of mine to this terrible disease years ago, and he was only in his 30s. This is a very tough cancer to beat, but if it's caught very early, treated aggressively, and has not metastasized, then it is survivable. She has certain risk factors to contend with, namely obesity and diabetes. I hope they were able to catch it in time, and that the medical community can give her the best chance possible. She is an American Institution, and I wish her all the best with her fight.
