CNN: Photo may have nudged Bush on Rice testimony
RE: "Photo may have nudged Bush on Rice testimony" on page http://us.cnn.com/2004/ALLPOLITICS/04/04/rice.testimony/index.html

<snip>
The photo, published in The New York Times on November 22, 1945, shows Adm. William D. Leahy -- White House chief of staff under Franklin Roosevelt and Harry Truman -- appearing before a congressional panel investigating the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, spokesman Al Felzenberg said.

Felzenberg said commission Executive Director Philip Zelikow faxed the photo Monday to the White House counsel's office to show there was a historical precedent for Rice to testify publicly and under oath.
</snip>

Terrific, we have another member of the administration that had to wait for the "Flash Card" version of admin policy to be made available before
taking action.

8. They were able to launch a much more successful cover-up...
...by starting the "investigation" as soon as possible. I find it interesting that Pearl Harbor has also turned out to be a LIHOP/MIHOP event that "galvanized the American people" toward war.

Day of Deceit: The Truth About FDR and Pearl Harbor

The Warren Commission was started on November 29, 1963, only seven days after the assassination of JFK. That too was an attempt to nudge the American people toward war with Cuba.

9. The 'FDR knew about Pearl harbor' is almost undoubtedly BS
Edited on Mon Apr-05-04 11:17 AM by jpgray
It's logically bankrupt anyway. If FDR knew about the attack and yet wanted to use it so the US could enter the war, all that would have been necessary was the attack itself. Actively allowing a military disaster to result from it would make zero sense, unless FDR was hot to have thousands of Americans die and tons of essential military hardware destroyed. Neither would advance his goals in any significant way when compared to an alert, well-defended Pearl Harbor being attacked. What made us go to war in that case was the sneak attack of Japan with no declaration of war--the military disaster and loss of life made the blow far heavier, but we still would have declared war on Japan without either.

10. Republicans have used the
FDR knew about Pearl Harbor line in the continuing attempt to defame FDR. They have never forgiven FDR for putting into effect restrictive banking/corporate regulations after the disastrous 1928 depression. Those business/banking regulations have been eroded over the years through deliberate assault by corporate interests and supported by so-called 'free enterprize' members of both parties. This is why the US is in an economic quagmire and living standards have taken a downward spiral in the US. The cause of the 'big depression'in the 20s and 30s was because of free wheeling unregulated business practices. Pure greed. We are there once again today.

2. More like "They caved, now they're trying to rationalize it."
The picture is an excuse AFTER THE FACT for them stonewalling, then throwing Condi to the wolves.

4. This is just another lie to portray Bush as grave and somber
We all know Bush didn't want Rice to testify because she would have to commit perjury or finger him for obstruction, negligence, and no telling what else. We all know he caved to prevent a subpoena, and a losing court battle that might open up an avalanche of actions against him.

So they create this fantasy that Bush was really only trying to protect the integrities of the office, of the separation of powers, and of the Constitution itself. Heck, maybe even of God, somehow. Bush genuinely wrestled with the issue until he was reassured by scholars that he would not do irreparable harm. Once released from that burden, he could let Rice testify, as he always wanted, without guilt.

It's all horseshit. Bush and company have stalled long enough to destroy evidence, to dictate terms of her testimony, and to coach everyone properly. Now he can let her testify, and he can appear even more put upon when he is asked. "I've given in to every demand of this witch hunt. I have to draw the line somewhere. I'm a busy man." Etc. Insert any Rove speech.

12. He used Condi's testifying as a pawn to get terms for his own testimony
He held back Condi until they agreed to

1/ NOT be able to question anyone else afterwards,
2/ NOT force Bush to be under oath,
3/ LET Bush have Cheney present during his oathless "testimony"
4/ Have NO filming, recording or stenographer, just one note taker with a pencil and paper (allows for fudge factor claims later)

So before throwing Condi to the lions, they used her to make it so that Bush has the freedom to lie to the commission (no oath), have real-time support from someone who does not have cocaine addled brains (Cheney) and no one, including Bush, can be compelled to testify later (when the inevitable questions arise from their conflicted testimony).

The members of the comissions should be ashamed of themselves for allowing Condi to be used as a pawn for this travesty - not for Condi's sake - she is complicit, but for agreeing to turn the whole 9/11 commission into a sham based on liars lying with impunity.

7. In fact, shrub* proved in a speech not too long ago that he has no idea
about history when he referred to the peaceful 100 (or maybe 150) year relationship of the US and Japan, which meant he forgot a little thing called WWII!!

11. This never ceases to amaze me
This proves that anyone applying for the most vital job of President of the US should be required to submit a competency resume/test. After all we don't allow anyone to prescibe Valium without the proper credentials.
