Protesters enraged by a Parliament vote to triple university tuition rates attacked a car carrying Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of York, Thursday night.

The demonstrators broke a window and tossed paint on the car, however neither royal family member was injured in the attack.

'We can confirm that their Royal Highnesses' car was attacked by protesters on the way to their engagement at the London Palladium this evening," a spokesman for the prince said. "Their Royal Highnesses are unharmed."

The attack followed a vote in the House of Commons to approve a plan to raise the existing cap on tuition rates charged by universities from £3,000 to £9,000. In U.S. dollars, that's a nearly $10,000 increase -- from roughly $4,700 to $14,000. Lawmakers approved the plan in a 323-302 vote.

5. No, but it does say something about journalism
and the use of celebrity news in the consumerist vision. At some point there has to be a breech into the struggle of ordinary people.

18. You'd be right
The Royal family has basically sod all power these days. They get a certain amount of money from the Civil List and we pay for the upkeep on the palaces (which, as national treasures, we'd be paying for anyway) but they don't have any actual power. These days, we retain them mostly because A) they're good fo tourism and B) getting rid of them would mean having to rewrite our entire Constitution.

I think what happened here is that Charles and Camilla got caught up in the protests by accident and became a taget due to their ostentatious wealth.

3. During the 1960's we were certainly entering a post-Royal era ...
assassination of JFK and overturning of our people's government set that back

-- it's the wrong message for anyone and to anyone!

No one is Royal -- and these institutions should be brought down -- non-violently!!

The money doesn't just magically appear out of nowhere as so many seem to believe.

by big banks and like idiots, our leaders in both parties
keep bailing them out. I guess when Ruben, Paulson, Geithner and other
Wall street bankers are in charge, why expect anything different.

11. Tuition fees protesters attack car carrying Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall
Source: The Telegraph

Prince Charles and the Duchess were unharmed as the window of their Rolls Royce was smashed and the car covered in paint.

An eyewitness said the car became separated from their police escort as they drove up Regent Street towards the London Palladium, and found themselves in the midst of crowds who had just left the protest in Trafalgar Square. Protesters bombarded the car with bottles and bins.

When the royal couple arrived at the London Palladium they appeared relaxed and smiled and joked with Kylie Minogue, Take That and N-Dubz, some of the acts performing for them.

Thank god that the cries of a lost generation didn't impede the royals trip to the Palladium.
