Sjolander said it was unclear what caused the second explosion but a police bomb squad has been sent to the site.

Another rescue services spokesman, Roger Sverndal said the car that exploded contained gas canisters ...

The O'Jays - When The World Is At Peace

When the world is at peace
When the world is at peace

I can see the day when it's safe to walk the streets
When we learn to care for those lost in poverty
There would be no need for our daughters and our sons
To march up and down the streets, singing we shall overcome
(Do it to me now)

When the worlds at peace will it still be in one piece
I pray for the day when the bombs and the bullets cease
Come let's make a change or leave the world in dust
Lets be the world of love for the ones that follow us
(Do it to me now)

If we learn to love the way we learn to kill
Then love will rule the world and hate would soon be still
Some may say they love but loves a sacrifice
Love is not a state of mind, loves a fact of life
(Do it to me now)

Hate be still
Love get behind me
Peace, what we need
Ha ha, peace is what we need now

TWO SIMULTANEOUS EXPLOSIONS IN STOCKHOLM, ONE KILLED

20:54 11 DIC 2010

(AGI) Stockholm - Two almost simultaneous explosions, within a 200-metre radius, shook central Stockholm. One man was killed just outside a Scorete shop and two more were injured, rescue officials said. The causes of the blasts are still unknown.
Apparently, however, two cars exploded. According to the reconstruction of the local media, the car exploded at the crossroads between Olof Palme Street and Queen Street. The second car exploded in Bryggargatan. . .

15. Explosions in Stockholm kill 1, injure 2
Source: CNN

Two explosions rocked central Stockholm on Saturday, killing one person, injuring two others and damaging a vehicle, Swedish police said.

"One explosion happened at the intersection of Drottninggatan and Olof Palmes Gata," two busy streets in central Stockholm, said police spokeswoman Petra Sjolander. "This was the car that exploded multiple times."

A second explosion occurred about five minutes later, at the intersection of Drottninggatan and Bryggargatan streets, Sjolander said.

A man was found dead at the scene of the second blast.

There are speculations whether this was a suicide bomber. Incidentally, Olof Palmes Gate is a street named after former Prime Minister Olof Palme, who was assasinated in 1986.

19. Islamic nutcase.
Edited on Sat Dec-11-10 04:32 PM by CJvR
Latest flash, seems as if it was a failed jihadist suicide bomber.
He had 6 pipe bombs and a backpack full of schrapnel, but only one bomb went of limiting the injuries to hearing and psycological trauma.

EDIT: apparently TT (a Swedish news agency) got a mail from this Jihadist moron or his friends before the blast. It seems they were annoyed that we refused to crucify Lars Vilks to calm their sensitive Islamic egos and they didn't approve of the Swedish participation in the Afghan campaign.

They picked a good day, most of the police was probably in Salem guarding nazis.

Some pictures from Stockholm.

46. "Sweden looks to boost Afghanistan force"
http://www.thelocal.se/22372/20090930/

Let's not you and I debate the right and wrong of the Afghanistan occupation here. No need to tell me Sweden isn't running drones directly. They're on the same side in the same war. You may think it's right. The suicide bomber in Stockholm obviously thought it is wrong. Scriptures alone almost never make people blow themselves up. You can call it twisted, unjustifiable, stupid, whatever: Attackers like this are almost always looking for payback against what they see as military aggression against their own homeland or a community they identify with (Muslims). If you want to understand it, you'll acknowledge that.

47. My question is: how do you know it's about the war and not a cartoon?
I don't recall ever seeing a post by you that I disagreed with. I don't want to start now with a 'knockdown drag-out'. My point was (assuming this was about the cartoon) that killing christmas shoppers probably isn't the best way to express your frustration with a cartoon. If I'm wrong and it's about the war, then that's a whole other can of worms.

48. A good skeptic never knows for sure. But that's what the papers now report.
From http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE6BA2GZ20101212

"The blasts Saturday took place after Swedish news agency TT said it received a threatening letter about Sweden's military presence in Afghanistan and a years-old case of caricatures of the Prophet Mohammad."

Other reports emphasize the Afghanistan part more. Regardless, it's the reports from the war there that would be reminding this guy every day about the cartoon slight.

No, there's no need for knockdown dragout. And of course killing Christmas shoppers is bad. It's kind of like, you know: killing civilians (predictably, if largely as "collateral") to "democratize" them. Except it's a small retail version of the crime, and the act of a fool rather than of a coalition of democratic states.

64. And right on cue: Sweden's far-right wants Islamist debate after blasts
Sweden Democrats propose debate in parliament in near future about violence-prone Islamic extremism.

http://www.middle-east-online.com/english/?id=43031

The far-right Sweden Democrats on Tuesday demanded a debate in parliament on Islamic extremism following the weekend's twin blasts in Stockholm that probably aimed to wreak carnage among Christmas shoppers.

"The Sweden Democrats demand a current debate in parliament about violence-prone Islamic extremism," said the party, which won its first parliamentary seats in September.

"The party proposes that the debate, due to large public interest, be held as soon as possible," it added in a statement.

"There is today a large public interest in a debate around these questions. People want to know how we as politicians look at Islamic extremism and what the preventive work looks like," Jimmy Aakesson, the head of the far-right, anti-immigration Sweden Democrats, said in the statement.

About 10 minutes before the blast he sent an email to the TT news agency and the Swedish police, saying that your "children, daughters and sisters shall die" and calls for jihad from other European muslims.

A bag of nails and five undetonated pipe bombs were found at the site. The car was loaded with gas tanks.

36. Failed Suicide bombs in central Stockholm caused panic among Christmas shoppers, 1 terrorist dead
Edited on Sat Dec-11-10 07:12 PM by DrGee5
Source: cbs news

A car explosion and what appeared to be a suicide attack injured two people, killed the apparent bomber, and caused panic among Christmas shoppers in Stockholm Saturday.

Stockholm Police spokeswoman Petra Sjolander said a car exploded near Drottninggatan, a busy shopping street in the center of the city. Shortly afterward, a second explosion was heard higher up on the same street, and a man was found injured on the ground.

He was later pronounced dead.

Sjolander said it was unclear what caused the second explosion and whether the two blasts were linked, but said a police bomb squad has been sent to the site.

Ten minutes before the blasts, Swedish news agency TT received an e-mail saying "the time has come to take action."

According to the news agency, the e-mail referred to Sweden's silence surrounding artist Lars Vilk's drawing of Muhammad as a dog and its soldiers in Afghanistan.

"Now your children, daughters and sisters shall die like our brothers and sisters and children are dying," the news agency quoted the e-mail as saying.

45. Seen? None. Have you? Now look up "Tamil Tigers."
They had a Marxist-inspired ideology, so they weren't blowing themselves up for god. They were doing it because they saw their homeland as occupied and oppressed by a hostile force.

How many suicide bombers have you "seen" who didn't conceive the act as a response to military actions and occupations? Religion can be a motivation, but it is almost never the cause for which they attack.

This isn't a justification. Just urging you to look at the reality.

52. How many religious people usually blow themselves to bits
intent on taking others with them?

It isn't religion that makes a terrorist. It's politics. Religion may be the convenient excuse, and I notice that Ireland, for instance, has bombs but not suicide bombers because they well know there's no sex in heaven and they aren't that anxious to go, but they do have the bombs.

Take a good hard look at all the swell religious wars of history, religion is a nice excuse for taking a man's land, but it's the land that's wanted.

54. Terrorist attacks in Sweden kill 1, injure many
Source: LA Times

Two people are injured in the two explosions in the Swedish capital and the apparent bomber is found fatally injured on the sidewalk nearby. An e-mail to news media threatens to take revenge for Sweden's 'war against Islam.'

A suspected suicide bomber was killed and two people were injured Saturday in blasts that rocked a popular shopping district in Stockholm, the Swedish capital.

A car parked at a crowded intersection in central Stockholm exploded about 4:50 p.m., followed by another blast a short distance away, Swedish news media reports said. At the scene of the second explosion, a witness reported finding a young man on the sidewalk with wounds to his midsection and a Palestinian kaffiyeh-style scarf tied around his face. The man, who has not been identified, later died.

Not sure what new laws you are specifically referring to, but I'm sure the SD are will outdo all other parties. They will push their anti-immigrant, Islamophobia theme as far as they can.

Once again two far-right groups (religious fanatics versus fascists) will stoke the fires of hatred and try to drag a society down a little further. We can hope that liberal, multicultural forces are able to stop the descent into the "my way or the highway" mindset.

59. six pipe bombs & a bag full of spikes & nails - his bomb failed,
It was a mujahedin, 29 years old, who carried 6 pipe bombs and a back pack full of nails into the middle of Drottninggatan in Stockholm's shopping district.

He presumably blew up a car first, but the cable connecting the pipe bombs broke for some reason, detonating only one of the pipe bombs which killed him and no one else.

If he had managed to detonate all six bombs with a bag full of spikes and nails in the middle of saturday's x-mas shopping...a massacre. Horrible.

:-(
