President Bush said today that the United States remains committed to handing over political power in Iraq on June 30, despite a surge of violence there, and he vowed not to allow a radical Shiite cleric to forcefully disrupt efforts to build democracy in Iraq.
Addressing reporters after a speech in North Carolina on the economy and job training, Bush said he would not be deterred by a steadily climbing U.S. death toll in Iraq and violent resistance from both Sunni Muslims loyal to ousted president Saddam Hussein and Shiite Muslim followers of a combative young cleric, Muqtada Sadr, whose father was killed by Hussein.
"My intention is to make sure the deadline remains the same," Bush said after his speech at Central Piedmont Community College in Charlotte, N.C., referring to the June 30 date for turning over sovereignty to Iraqis after more than a year of occupation. "We're now in the process of deciding what they entity will look like to whom we will transfer sovereignty," he said. "The date remains firm."
