Evan Bayh decides against run for Indiana governor in 2012

U.S. Sen. Evan Bayh will not seek a return engagement as Indiana’s governor in 2012.

“It was a very hard decision,” said Bayh, who served two terms as the state’s top executive from 1989 to 1997. “A big part of me wants to.”

But, he told The Indianapolis Star, he decided that not disrupting his twin sons’ lives, now that they are freshmen in high school, took precedence over political ambition.

Bayh’s decision ends, at least for now, an era in Indiana politics. The son of former U.S. Sen. Birch Bayh, he burst onto the political scene in 1986 when at age 30 he won election as secretary of state before sweeping to victory as governor two years later.

... Without Bayh heading the Democratic ticket, the odds of a Republican holding on to the governor’s office go up.

15. He will challenge Obama in 2012.
No doubt in my mind he will challenge Obama as being too far to the left. He's got 10 million sitting in the bank that he can spend to do that. And the Washington DC Press Corpse will back him all the way. Just wait for a couple weeks and you'll see that old fart Broder pushing Bayh as a "voice of desperately needed bipartisan moderation". And the rest of our Press Whores will fall in line.

I'm one of those who started the Draft Kennedy movement in 1978. And I can tell you from experience that Evan Bayh is NO Ted Kennedy. In fact he's just a disgrace to his Dad, Birch Bayh. I remember Birch Bayh as a tough and solid principled liberal who stood up to the New Right. Something his spoiled son never had any desire to be.

6. ... as a resident, I say ... THANK YOU GOD!
Mitch is an asswipe Republican, for sure, but Bayh's underhanded shell-game dealings while he was gov the first time around fucked this state's finances in a major way.

He needs to just retire and be happy being a kept husband while his wife rakes in all her Wellpoint Board dividends.
