US Senators warn of Iraq Civil War
Richard Lugar and Joe Biden, the Republic and Democratic Party leaders of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said the US should consider postponing the handing over of sovereignty which at the moment is set for 30 June.

The date is an important political deadline for the White House, which wants to be able to show the American people that it is making progress towards handing Iraqi affairs back to the Iraqi people.

The political fallout from the violence of the last few days in Iraq is beginning to take on worrying proportions for the Bush administration.....

....Democrat Senator Joe Biden talked over the weekend of the real prospect of civil war in Iraq if the White House sticks to the 30 June deadline for handing over sovereignty.

Mr Biden said Nato should be involved and the UN should be invited to send a commissioner to help run the country.

Mr Biden's Republican colleague, Richard Lugar, also talked of the possibility of civil war.

He said it was time to begin a debate on whether the 30 June handover could still take place.....

5. This is complete bullshit
Whats happening now is a goddamned multiple front insurgency. Those fucks are misleading the public into thinking that the Iraqi's hate each other (some factions do, but they aren't fighting each other right now) and not the occupation. There is a real possibility that the insurgency might actually bring those opposing factions together against the US.

6. Agreed
The world can see as much, even if Fox TV-fed Americans can not.

Biden has loaned the last dregs of his reputation to this imperial deceit; he is just another Wolfowitz now.

7. Biden-Lugar
These guys were looking to avoid/postpone a war as long as possible.
Don't sell them short.
They are looking out for the good of all.

8. Further discussion here
I think we are primarily seeing an insurrection against the occupiers. However, there are issues of the US exploiting ethnic and religious tensions at play as well.

9. While I agree with Biden and Lugar...
...I wonder when WILL it be a good time to turn the government over to the Iraqis. Whether it's June 30th, October 30th, or December 30th, I fear the outcome will be the same...civil war the minute we hand over the keys.
