Mother killed, 5 hurt in gunbattle at Calif. mall
Source: Google/AP

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — A mother loading her 2-year-old son into an SUV was killed Tuesday and five others were wounded in a gunbattle at a strip mall in south Sacramento, authorities said.

Two men were inside a barber shop just before 1 p.m. when two other men came in and started shooting, said Sacramento County Sheriff's Sgt. Tim Curran.

The men in the barber shop were armed and returned fire, Curran said.

The gunbattle apparently moved into the parking lot with at least one of the suspects getting into a white sedan. Curran said the gunfire continued as some of the suspects got away.

1. fortunately, the men in the barbershop were able to defend themselves...
If only that mom and her toddler had been armed.

3. It sounds as though she was caught in the crossfire...
Not sure how her being armed would have helped that.

7. Idiotic comment
Could have been a bullet from one of the barbershop guns that killed her. Wild West gun battles don't discriminate.

15. Uhm, you missed how these things normally work here.
After every shooting, there's usually somebody saying that there should have been more people armed, because that would have stopped the shooter quicker...

8. California, as a rule, does not issue CCW permits to mere citizens
These gentlemen were, perhaps, breaking the law.

33. That would be...incorrect.
Edited on Thu Dec-16-10 07:52 PM by Xithras
Many California counties including mine (Stanislaus) will issue a CCW to anyone who has completed the safety course, has a clear criminal record, and pays the fee. Under California law, a CCW issued in one county is legal in any other county. It's impossible to get one in the SF Bay Area or in much of Southern California, but there are a number of counties elsewhere in the state that aren't so tight fisted with them. Many of those counties are in the Sacramento region.

No, I don't have one, but I know MANY people who do. I've thought about taking the course and getting the permit just to have it, even though I have no intention of carrying. You never know what might come up though.

34. It has *EVERYTHING* to do with gun politics.
The reason innocent bystanders can so frequently get caught
in the crossfire in this country is that there is so much crossfire
to get caught in because so many people have guns.

If there were far fewer guns, there'd be far fewer gun battles.

But America has made its choice to allow any idiot to have guns
and we're all living far less safely every day because of it.

:sarcasm:

There are something like 250 million guns in the US, enough for almost every man, woman and child. It's nuts.

when it is impossible to purchase drugs in the US, move on to a right protected by the legal system.
