Blasts heard in Baghdad
April 6, 2004

TWO blasts were heard in central Baghdad early today, followed shortly by machine-gun fire, AFP correspondents said.

Heavy machine-gun fire was heard for more than 10 minutes after two blasts rocked the capital at around 11.10pm local time (5.10am AEST).

Meanwhile, an AFP correspondent in Sadr City, a Shi'ite Muslim slum to the north-east of the capital, said several explosions occurred in an area where US tanks have been deployed around police stations.

The blasts were followed by tank fire and machineguns. Clashes have pitted US-led coalition troops and followers of Shi'ite leader Moqtada al-Sadr in Baghdad and other southern cities for the past 48 hours.

7. It's hard to gain UN support...
When Bush* has squandered any good will this nation might have had. Jeez, declaring the UN Irrelevant didn't helped much, either.

9. Then you should support firing Bremer
and begging the UN and/or NATO to send peacekeepers as soon as possible. In the mean time we should do whatever we can to stop inciting the civilian population. Issuing warrants for the arrest of one of their spiritual leaders and surrounding whole cities in barbed wire isn't going to do anything except make matters worse than they already are.

11. UPI story from a locked thread: "Baghdad's streets turn deadly"
This is a nightmare. Wake up, America, and get the hell out!

By daybreak, U.S. M1A2 tanks were stationed throughout key intersections of the neighborhood, which had fallen quiet. But the charred remains of two Humvees -- in a section of town completely controlled by Sadr's men -- and the huge numbers of dead and wounded crammed into the local hospital told a story of carnage in which dozens of Iraqis found themselves caught between militia members and the heaviest weapons in the U.S. Army arsenal.

...

No less than 12 bodies of civilians -- including two young children -- could be seen in the hospital, where the morgue was overflowing with dead, leaving bodies wrapped in shrouds on the patio in front of the building. And these were the bodies of the unclaimed, unidentified victims -- family members had been claiming their dead all morning and had taken at least another 12 away for burial, according to doctors.

More dead were also shipped to Baghdad's Kindi Hospital, which has a larger refrigerator facility.

"I never saw a more despicable and evil action by the Americans (last night)," Dr. Tariq Atham said. "Even (Ariel) Sharon (Prime Minister of Israel) or Saddam are better. Saddam hurt us Shiite a lot, but what we're seeing from the Americans is shit. They shot children and women in the face and neck every time. Saddam never did that."
