US state executes murderer with animal drug
Source: AFP

WASHINGTON — A US state executed a convicted murderer with an animal drug for the first time because of an anesthetic shortage, in a move critics panned as a test on a human guinea pig.

Oklahoma executed John Duty, 58 -- who in 2001 strangled his 22-year-old cellmate, Curtis Wise, while serving three life sentences -- with pentobarbital, normally used by veterinarians to put animals to sleep.

"The procedure started at 6:12 pm our time (0012 GMT). John Duty was pronounced dead at 6:18pm," Jerry Massie, a spokesman for the Oklahoma Department of Corrections, told AFP.

"His last words were: 'To the family of Curtis Wise: I'd like to make my apology. I hope one day you'll be able to forgive me, not for my sake but for your own... Thank you, Lord Jesus. I'm ready to go home,'" Massie said.

3. I am against the death penalty in all cases...
...however, this doesn't strike me as outrageous. Two of my beloved dogs had to be euthanized in this manner, and their end was peaceful.

4. I asked the vet, after having to put our dog down, if it was available for
Humans. First they shoot them up with enough morphine to stop a tractor, then they give the shot ....peaceful and fast ... I've seen many a slow death in hospitals that look way worse than that!

I'm against the death penalty because it costs too much vs life in prison, takes too long from
the time the crime was committed, and in many cases the person does not get good legal consul
but as long as the d.p. is on the books this seems like a "good way" to do the deed.

Duty was serving two concurrent life sentences for robbery, shooting with intent to kill, and rape, when he murdered Wise.
Duty convinced Wise to pose as a hostage to entice guards to move Duty to a different cell. After binding Wise's hand and
foot, Duty strangled him.

Duty then wrote a letter to his victim's mother bragging about the murder.

11. I knew a dude that tried the same cheap alternative when he hit his
doughnut hole. I stopped going around him, because he started licking his balls, sniffing people's ass and humping their leg.

13. I'm against the death penalty because I don't seed the power to take a life to the State.
But I have to confess that my view was challenged in recent months as someone committed a crime against my adult son (he is OK though it was a hard couple of months). I have never felt such rage against a person and I realized that I wanted them to die. It occurred to me that if someone I love was murdered, I would have a very hard time not wanting them to be killed by the State as a matter of vengeance. After much reflection, I changed my mind and realized that I still opposed the death penalty but I understand it in a much different way now.

15. Pentobarbital is used for conscious sedation in humans,
and has been for years. The fact that it is also used for animals does not mean that it's an "animal drug", anymore that other dual use drugs, such as penicillin.

We put down our beloved sick old cat, and this stuff was used, and I only hope I will be so lucky when my time comes. I held her in my arms the whole time, 5 seconds and she was out, 15 and she was gone.
