Stewart Dedicates Last Show Of 2010 Entirely To 9/11 First Responders Bill

Thursday night marked the final "Daily Show" of the year -- and the decade -- so it's fitting that Jon Stewart spent its entirety discussing something both near to his heart and tied an event that happened nearly 10 years ago: the 9/11 First Responders Bill.

Stewart has probably spent more segments this year on the legislation known as the Zadroga bill than any other topic. The bill would provide $7 billion in benefits for those who first responded on 9/11 and are now experiencing subsequent health problems such as cancer and respiratory disease. While it has passed in the House, Senate Republicans are filibustering it so that it doesn't pass in the Senate.

However, Congress did just agree on and pass the controversial tax cut bill that will give tax cuts to everyone including the very rich.

***"Yes!" Stewart exclaimed. "That is astoundingly good news for firefighters who make over $200,000 a year."

Nearly pulling his hair out at one point, Stewart expressed his annoyance at "the party that turned 9/11 into a catchphrase" now blocking legislation to help its heroes. Adding to his frustration, none of the three major networks have covered the story in over two months. Surprisingly, Stewart realized this was a actually a job for Fox News, "the nation's leading source of 9/11-based outrage."

As Jon Stewart demonstrates, Al Jazeera gave more coverage to the outrageous GOP filibuster against providing health care to injured 9/11 first responders than did all American news networks combined.

Welcome to the Club, Jon. I know how you feel.

5. Loved that episode!!!
The only thing that kinda spoiled it was having the POS Huckabee on. But Jon dealt with him quite well.

8. That was great but he did have that asshat Huckabee on, too.
However, he talked about the 9-11 first responders with the asshat.

10. Jon Stewart Takes On Republicans Who Fought 9/11 First Responder Bill
Source: ABC News

Comedian Jon Stewart put the stalled 9/11 health bill center stage on his final show of the year, lambasting Senate Republicans for holding up passage of a bill that would provide billions of dollars in health care for sick 9/11 first responders.

"This is an outrageous abdication of our responsibility to those who were most heroic on 9/11," Stewart said. "The party that turned 9/11 into a catchphrase are now moving suspiciously into a convenient pre-9/11 mentality when it comes to this bill."

The bill, if passed, would provide $7.4 billion in health care benefits and compensation to first responders who became ill after being exposed to pollutants in the wreckage of New York's World Trade Center. The bill would create a fund for sick first responders, providing them with health insurance when their current insurance or worker's compensation payments were gone.
...

The sticking point for the GOP Senators is finding a different way to offset the costs of the $7.4 billion measure. Sen. Collins said Thursday night that she will back the bill assuming it includes the "appropriate offsets."

Offsets!?!? Offsets!?!? Susan Collins and her GOP obstructionist ilk are really something special.

12. No "offset" for the $800 Billion extended debt creation provided by the uber riche tax cut
they are so full of $h!t

They stop this
they demand tax cuts for the rich and DID hold everyone else's tax cuts hostage
and now (another thread) they are going to stop increased food safety legislation THAT ALREADY PASSED

all that in 1 week.

13. +1
They also neglected to "offset" the costs of the war in Iraq and Afghanistan by sneaking them into budget supplementals (instead of the normal Pentagon budget) every freaking year.

17. Or how about the ...
$3.3 Trillion to bail out the banks.
Yes, that is TRILLION.

Bush told us in Oct. 2008 that it would only be $783B

But after Barney Frank had the disclosure bill passed, and all the information
came forward, we find out that our tax dollars bailed out not only US Banks,
but banks in Scotland, France, Switzerland, Germany, Japan ...

Why is our Tax Dollars bailing out foreign banks, have their citizen bail out
their banks.

15. And where are the stories about the Dems who fought the 9/11 bill?
Surly there are a huge number, since you know, right and left are both equally flawed...because I create reality out of my own facts.

21. Daily Show went out with bang this year after being in and out for a number
of months now. It's not that I think they should pound down republicans every night, it's that I believe the writing has been off for a while and the use of their "reporters" has been subpar. Meanwhile Colbert has been knocking it dead with some of the best satire ever written and performed. I'm hoping this final few days carries over for the Daily Show.
